BURNS, ATCS Wesley E. Retired wes@cpbid.com "...I served with VP-24 from January 1961 to November 1963. I was discharged on the day President Kennedy was assassinated. I served as a radioman and MAD Operator on LR-8. LT Meyers was the pilot and LT McCullough (I think) Co-Pilot. The only crew members I can remember were AD Harry Windslow, AE1 George Peters and AO3 Fred Knight. I remember the Cuban Crisis flying endless hours rigging ships, NAS Keflavik, Iceland and holding onto the ropes in blinding snow storms to find your way around and the great time we had in Norway, can't remember the base we flew out of but it was a young man's dream. I spent a year and a half in civilian life and then reentered the service in 1965. My career was as ships company aboard the aircraft carriers Saratoga, Kennedy, and Independence. Ashore I taught at NAMTRADET Oceana. I retired February 1983 as an ATCS. I went on to consult to the US Department of State and US Customs assisting in the flight testing and selection of aviation electronics equipment for their aviation drug interdiction programs in the states and world-wide. Hello to all my Shipmates! If you know where I can get the squadron patch of that time, or emblem, I would appreciate it..." [01APR2010]

MEYER, Danny Lee planey713@bellsouth.net "...I finally found a connection to VP-17...I trained for the Plane Captain (PC) position on LZ-9 early in 1966. My PPC was LCDR Keaney, and my instructor was PO-1 Seversen. I finally and proudly passed the PC Board and was assigned by CDR M. O. Paul to Crew-9 with LCDR Heimbacher before deploying to WESTPAC and the Ton San Nhut DET-1966 to 1967. Those were some of my proudest days as a young sailor. I did discharge in July 1967 to the civilian world only to join up with VP-94 as a Reservist P2 PC, and a P-3 FE until I retired from the Reserves in 1990. VP was good to me - I actually was hired by U. S. Customs Service to fill a position of a P-3 FE and eventually an Aviation Maintence Officer until that retirement in July 2008. Thank you VP for a most interesting life. One thing I missed was the squadron never did send me my DET Cruisebook for 66-67 - I would have liked to have shared it wih my family. I paid for it, but it was lost in the cracks..." [13MAR2010]
