Memorial Picture "...DITZLER, Robert W...(VP-4 1950-1952)...Robert Wayne Ditzler, age 86, died quietly on June 29, 2017, in Seattle, Washington of a stroke surrounded by his wife and many of his family. Bob was an Aviation Electronics Technician and flew as a Radar Operator. Bob was born March 9, 1931, in Grinnell, Iowa, and was a 60 year resident of Washington state. Bob resided in Sharingwood, a co-housing community in Snohomish County that he helped found, since 1987. He built many of the houses in the community and also designed and drew the plans for the community’s beautiful common house. Bob went into the Navy immediately after graduating from high school. He was an electronics technician/radar operator. Upon his discharge, Bob went to work at Boeing, but soon found himself bored. When he went for career counseling, George Mantor told him he had the best job available. Then George suggested if Bob wanted something new, he should try going to college – a first for his family. This led him to Reed College in Oregon, UC Berkeley in California, Edinburgh, Scotland, and finally, to a Masters Degree in History from the University of Washington. During his time at the UW he was invited to go to Alaska with scientists doing research at a station on the floating ice. His electronic skills were needed. This stint was the source of many of his best tales. Also while going to the UW, Bob supported himself doing remodeling jobs. He found he loved this work and after graduation Bob began a 50+-year career as a self-employed designer/builder. His skill in designing beautiful, useful spaces for his clients was much in demand. Bob was always thankful he had found a career he really loved. Bob married Stephana Ames in 1988. Life together was rich, as they shared interests, families and friends. They attended Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church where Bob was one of the founding members. In 2001 he dedicated two years of his life to the construction of the congregation’s new church on Woodinville Duvall Road. Among Bob’s many interests were reading, gardening, sailing, backpacking, traveling, baroque music and the construction and flying of model hot air balloons. Bob was well-known for his legendary spit- roasted lamb, as well as being chief cook for large friend and family gatherings. Whatever he did it was with such a zest for life that all activities he was involved in were made more fun! Bob is survived by his present wife of almost 30 years, Stephana Ditzler, and step-children David Ames and Karen LeCompte (husband Tom), as well as previous wife Jane Ditzler, mother of his three adopted children; Mark Ditzler (wife Sally), J.C. Ditzler (wife Crista), and Peach Jack (husband Dave). Bob and Stephana have 13 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Bob is also survived by sisters Mary Duryee, Marjorie Hillmann and Charlotte Smith (husband Smitty). A Celebration of Bob’s life will be held September 2, 2017, 2:00 p.m., at Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church, 19020 N.E. Woodinville Duvall Road, Woodinville, WA. Memorial gifts may be given to the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee or Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church...." DILLON, Kenn kennethfdillon@aol.com "...I served with VP-4 (1976-1980) as a IFT. I was looking at the aircraft pages and remembered that during my time there seven of our aircraft had a unique numbering system. The BUNOs ran from 153430 through 153436 and the Squadron Designation was YD-7 through YD-1. So that if you were flying on YD-1 the BUNO was 153436. If you were on BUNO 153434 you were on YD-3. The last digit of the BUNO added to the Squadron Designation added to the number 7. I don't know who came up with that idea, but it sure made it easy to remember those seven planes. I remember an incident we had with a plane flying back from Tahiti. We had to make an emergency landing at Barbers Pt. due to a loose port landing gear/wheel. I had the best view when we landed, since I was the port aft observer. Talk about sparks. By the time we stopped the wheel and the axle were welded together. No injuries, just som damange to the aircraft and runway..." [05JUN2013]

DINGEE, AMSC Carroll R. Retired jeepdriver@embarqmail.com "...I served with VP-11 (1965-1969) at NAS Brunswick, Maine. I was a shop type maintenance crewmember (flying minimum time on test flights) on the P2. In 1967 we transitioned to the P-3's having gone through the AM maintenance courses, I thouhgt I'd like to become a Flight Engineer. So, in August 1967 I departed for VP-30 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland and made it through Ground Phase without a hitch. Unfortunately, I "flunked out" during the OFT and Performance Charts! I left VP-30 and rejoined VP-11 in disgrace. When my CO and I talked things over, I told him that up to this point in my life I did not know I needed glasses (can't work the charts if you can't see them clearly). So, to make a long story short, I got glasses, went back to VP-30 in 1968 and made it as a FE! To my knowledge I am the ONLY person to go through FE training a second time during the transition envelope for a squadron and succesfully complete the course. (VP-30 probably still would like to say no one ever did it, but go back and check the records---I did it). Thought you might find my 10 minutes of fame and glory interesting). I served with VP-23 (12/1970-07/1974) - best tour of sea duty I ever had in 22+ years of service! Spent most of my tour as FE on CAC-8. PPC C. C. Nute (he went on to be C.O. of a west coast VP Squadron.) My last contact with him (or any of our old crew) was in 1980 while serving with VF-143 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) in the Indian ocean. I also served with VX-1 (1974-1977) and spent most os my time on the Line Crew. My wife, Betty, was President of the Enlisted Wives Club while we were there. We both still have many fond memories of our tour there (anyone remember the Pig Roast?). I retired out of VF-43 NAS Oceana, Va. in 1984. I am now retired and living (with wife Betty and you guys said it would never last) in Ocala, Fl. I would like to hear from former Shipmates..."
