He was with HEDRON (HEaDquarters sqadRON). Before that, he was at USN PFS, Chapel Hill, NC, NTS Bainbridge, MD, NATTC Jacksonville, FL, NATTC, Memphis, TN, and NAS Bunker Hill, IN. After the war ended and he left England, he went back to NATTC, NAS Norman, Oklahoma, NAS Jacksonville, Florida, and NAS Norfolk, Virginia. Please let me know if you knew him. In 1943 and happened to look out the window and spotted the Italian submarine Archimede on the ocean surface. History was made when the sub was sunk by 2 to 3 planes on that day. His uniforms, pictures, and the book The Galloping Ghost of the Brazilian Coast is on display at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, MN. I'm working on a book about my father and was wondering if anyone could let me know what it was like for my dad or anyone to go on a mission like that and be a part of history. My dad received the Gold Star and the Air Medal from Eleanor Roosevelt at the NAS Coco Solo, Panama, Canal Zone a year after the incident. I look forward to hearing from someone. Elizabeth J. "...KLOTZ, Donald Sr...Wilton resident Donald Klotz Sr., a veteran of both World War II and the Korean conflict, and for more than four decades an integral part of the community, died June 3 at age 85. Klotz enlisted in the Navy in 1942 at age 17 and served four years as a radioman-gunner with the Black Cat Squadron VP-23, stationed in the Pacific. In 1990, the 50th anniversary of WWII, Don organized the first Reunion of his VP-23 squadron. He started publishing a monthly newsletter called the Black Cat Log, to help locate surviving members, and to collect documents and stories. The wealth of material he gathered inspired him to write a collective memoir about the valiant exploits of the Navy's PBY squadrons. The book is titles "On Hell's Perimeter: Pacific Tales of PBY Patrol Squadron 23 in WWII.". KLARQUIST, Norman klarq@hitter.net "...The comment about the PV2 Mishap ditching in Lake Michigan in April '50 caught my attention for I was aboard that aircraft. The squadron was VP-811 (organized reserve) and we returning from a flight to San Juan over Easter and flew into a into a storm over NAS Glenview, Illinois so we could not land. We circled until short of fuel so our pilot decided to ditch as the safest means of landing. We landed safely and without injuries due to our training during the war. I still have the newspaper articles on the incident. Had one more incident at Mpls. when the pilot retracted the gear instead of the flaps right in front of the terminal. I worked for the "Leading Chief" at that time who was Senior CPO Gesek and his main man ABH1 "Smitty" Harold J. Frank Smith. My duties at the time were general office maintenance, filing, keeping track of who was where TAD people etc. on the section boards (there were four of them). I also had to take care of the chiefs lounge with the usual coffee making and having the acey-duecy board games on hand. I can recall a Lt. Sellers who gave me his first "Outstanding!" on an office and lounge inspection also CPO Campos, CPO Marinella and AMH1 Davis. Paisano Dos and El Coyote were two of the aircraft I remember there. Became an FE with them during their transistion to P-3's. During the 20 year career I also did tours with VP-17, VP-90, NARC NAS Minneapolis, Minnesota and I think a few other places. As a civilian I wrenched for an air tanker outfit flying P2's. A most interesting part of aviation. I've worked in the airline industry, maintenance director with a travel club and finally retiring from working on DC-10's for TIMCO Aviation in 2005.
