Memorial Picture "...WOOD, Robert and TWEEDY, Glenn...Sadly I must report the deaths of my two shipmates Robert Wood and Glenn Tweedy. Bob passed away in Feb. 2001 while shoveling snow in his driveway. His collapse was witnessed by his married daughter who attempted to revive him, all to no avail. Bob was mentor to many of us who flew with him. He was a Navy man, but particularly, he was always a friend first. He constantly offered advice which, at the time, did not seem like advice, but which always proved to be beneficial both on and off the crew. He was just a great guy to go on liberty with, and a great guy to fly with. Glen Tweedy passed away from cancer in 2001. He had battled this for some time, I understand. We affectionately called Glenn, "Tweety bird." He made the last Reunion of VP-23. What a small and diminishing world we live in. God bless and keep our service men and women safe. He was the Commanding Officer of VP-6 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii when I was a small child. He died from cancer and we are trying to see if any other of his fellow officers who went on special bombing missions over Johnston Island also have died of like cancer. I would appreciate hearing any information you may have regarding this. I am trying to get a case similar to the Agent Orange case for Vietnam. Thanks for your time in this matter. My Dad relished the times he spent with his men in this squadron. Many great stories have filled my life revolving around VP-6. If you have any nice tales to share about my Dad I would appreciate hearing about them. I am trying to put together a memory book for the family about my Dad. Memorial Picture Shipmate Pix "...WORTHINGTON, Charles K...I have come across since I found some notes and logs my father (Charles K. Worthington) kept during WWII. The log/notes contain the names of some pilots, aircraft reference numbers and missions. And in one case the names of an entire crew lost in a landing crack-up, apparently he knew them all. I have determined he was in VP-15. I know he flew on a PB2Y Coronado as gunner. Was in the NAS Coco Solo, Panama, Canal Zone, later at NAS Tanapag Harbor, Saipan, Marianas Islands, returning to the U.S. (Minnesota of all places) for Flight Training in early August 1945. He completed it and later taught ground school. I would be glad to provide any of the info I have, if it would be of use for others. WOOD, Charles Mills Jr. (Deceased) http://www.usna.com/history/classof1940/W.htm "...Charles Mills Wood, Jr. ("C.M." to his family and "Jughead" to his Naval Academy friends) was one of fourteen of the class of '40 who reported to USS NEVADA (BB36) upon graduation. During the two years, he served in NEVADA, Jug was assigned to communications. Ashore in Honolulu on December 7, 1941, he managed to get back on board while the Jap attack was still in progress. He stayed with NEVADA during salvage at Pearl Harbor and return to Bremerton for repairs and modernization. In the summer of 1942, he married Nell Rice Wynn, his Naval Academy OAO and Ring Dance date. Orders to flight training brought detachment from NEVADA in October, 1942. In May, 1943, a son, Charles Mills Wood III was born; and Jug was perhaps even prouder of his son than most new fathers. (C.M. Wood III graduated from USNA in the class of 1965 and recently retired as a Commander, USN, after a career in submarines). Upon completion of flight training, Jug was ordered to VPB-149. After being stationed on Cape Cod and at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island, VPB-149 was ordered to the Pacific area and in February, 1945, arrived at Tacloban on Leyte Island, Philippines. On March 22, 1945, while on a routine patrol flight, which included an attack on a Japanese installation, Jug failed to return. He was declared missing and a year later was declared to be legally deceased. In 1950, a U.S. Army Graves Registration Team located a crashed PV-1 bomber in the area where Jug's plane had last been contacted. The remains of those found in the crashed plane were subsequently identified as those of Jug and his crew. They are buried in a common grave at the Fort Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. Jug was a good friend, an outstanding naval officer and a strong person of the highest integrity and character. He has been sorely missed, especially by his family and those of us who knew him best. WOOD, AW2(AW) Pete pvwood@earthlink.net "...>What a long, strange trip it's been! And it all started as a young, impressionable airman with VP-49 in January of 1987. I spent four years with the Woodpeckers, to include three deployments to NAS Bermuda, NAS Sigonella, Sicily, and NAS Bermuda- NAS Keflavik, Iceland. I met some great friends along the way: George Metcalf, Bob Rymsa, Brian Cook, Casey Bennett, Pat Zeigler, Rob Hazelip, Jamie Sippel, Chuck Milhollen, Bryce Merrill, Rob Ochoa, Neil Smith, only to name a few. Unfortunately, I've lost contact with most of these folks. If any of you miscreants are out there or if you know how to get a hold of them, please let me know!...I received overseas orders to NOCC NS Rota, Spain in January 1991. I was there for about two and a half years when I was lucky enough to be selected for ECP. From there, I went home to Boulder, Colorado and completed my degree, earned my commission, and started flight school in July 1996. Now I'm an Electronic Countermeasures Officer (NFO) stationed up at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington with VAQ-131. We did a Westpac on board the USS Constellation last summer and flew many sorties in support of Operation Southern Watch. We set sail for the Connie's last cruise next March. Rumor has it that it's going to be a world cruise - that should be fun! I've got another two years left with the Lancers before I rotate to shore duty, which will be my twilight tour! WOODS, Brian Dunstan http://www.pownetwork.org/bios/w/w073.htm "...Commander- United States Navy - Shot Down: September 18, 1968 - Released: February 12, 1973 - Commander Brian D. Woods was the first POW to come home after the Vietnam cease fire. His mother lay dying in the hospital - having been ill during most of his imprisonment. This was the only reason he agreed to return first - she was actually dying. Upon his return, Commander Woods said, "We are grateful and overwhelmed. We are proud to be Americans. We are proud to have served our country and our Commander-in-Chief." Commander Woods enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1950. He was called to active duty in 1951 and had his first assignment as an Aviation Ordanceman. After the tour in VS 661 he attended the Naval Academy Prep School at Bainbridge, Maryland, after which he completed his education at the Naval Academy and UCLA. On September 18, 1968 while flying a combat mission from the U.S.S. Constellation, his A-7A was shot down by the North Vietnamese in the vicinity of Vinh, North Vietnam. He was captured right there, on the spot. When Commander Woods arrived at Clark, he telephoned his wife, Paula, and their three children, Cathleen, 9; Christopher, 8; and Michael, 7. (They sponsor a foster child in Thailand in a leper colony-13 year old Voran ju J iamvisut). When the telephone rang Michael grabbed the phone and cried, "Hi Daddy. I love you. This is Michael. I'm seven now." He was two when his Daddy was deployed. When asked what the family would do when they got him back, they replied, "Love him. Just love him!" A note from Mrs. Brian Woods: We would like to adopt Voranju - she is an orphan, but does have family and a grandparent there, so we sponsor her, instead. We started this when she was 8 1/2 years because we needed to substitute love for the love we had been deprived of, without giving up waiting for Brian. We reached out to a needy child, half-way around the world, and, through her, God poured out his merciful, healing balm to our family. Now that Brian is home, we are awaiting our own fourth child, at the prime of our lives and can close the chapter of our family memories, by a whole new beginning. P.S. Voranju is a baptized Methodist in a Presbyterian Leprosy Rehabilitation Center; and we are all Roman Catholic. We did not, actually, intend to be ecumenical, but we sure are! Brian Woods retired from the United States Navy as a Captain. He lives in California..." [27OCT2003]

Recently, two members of that group were able to attend a re-union in Grandbury, Texas, where they participated in a patriotic salute to our veterans.
