A BIT OF HISTORY: "...D. K. Johnson forwarded info dealing with a book "Shobun" by Michael Goodwin Jr., and opined that it pertained to the VPB-101 aircrew shot down near Brunei Bay, North Borneo. Upon checking further, we were advised by George U. Favorite, VPB-33, that the author of "Shobun" was the son of William Goodwin, navigator of a VPB-101 crew which was shot down near Vendari, Celebes Is. - not Brunei Bay - and that Goodwin was the only officer to survive the crash. He was, thereafter, executed by beheading. Favorite did not mention other members of the crew, but it is another of the numerous losses suffered by VPB-101...The above referenced the VPB-101 Brunei Bay "shoot down". We now have word from Mrs. John P. Heimann that she has finally made contact with a Robert J. Graham, Jacksonville, n, who is the last remaining survivor (by Navy records) of the Borneo crash. Our search on her behalf resulted in a somewhat subdued but at least, a final conclusion. It has been an interesting and historic project in which to be involved..." VAGABOND NEWS
"...I found some pictures of his dads crew, not his Dad, but some of the crew members who were shot down and beheaded in Kendari. Unfortunately, Mr. Goodwin must have changed e-mail providers because my e-mail can't get through..." Contributed by Larry Katz papakatz@sbcglobal.net [03JUL2000]
