...In February 1965, the advance base ship was called upon to salvage a jet aircraft which had splashed in shallow waters off the coast of Libya. She then returned to Naples to prepare for her longest advance base operation to that time. Patrol Squadron 24 operated from Tallachatchie's advance base in Souda Bay from July through September while the runways at the NAS Sigonella, Sicily, were being repaired....

Disestablished in April 1995 following a 52 year tour of duty, the Batmen of VP-24 went oLT strong, winning the COMNAVAIRLANT Battle E for 1994 and participating in numerous exercises in the Mediterranean, Iceland area and the Atlantic. Home-based at NAS Jacksonville, FL, VP-24, which flew combat in WW II and participated in Desert Storm, has operated throughoLT the world, most currently flying the P-3C Update III Orion.
The squadron was originally designated VB-104 when established at NAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii in April 1943, flying PB4Y-1 Liberators. The Batmen later flew P2V Neptunes. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, VP-24 helped enforce the naval blockade of communist Cuba, operating from Leeward Point Field, Guantanamo Naval Base. The Batmen transitioned to Orions in 1967.
Upon disestablishment, the squadron had flown 26 years and 169,000 hours of accident-free flying. The last CO was CDR Steve A. Seal.
