Plane started bouncing on take-off run, the bouncing became increasingly-violent and the plane was seen to swerve to the left and burst into flames: Four men came to the surface immediately after the crash, but three sank before the crash boat arrived in approx. 3-mins. MishapsMISHAPs: 01 OCT 41 A/C: PBY-5 pby Location: 170mi east of Boston, MA Strike: Yes BUNO: 2301 Cause: Take-off from Portland,Me for Argentina, Newfoundland. Plane entered overcast at 500' and climbed to 15,000' before top was reached. Severe icing was encountered when an attempt was made to let down. De-icing system was deployed successfully and plane reversed its course to return to Nas Quonset Pt,RI. Plane made an instrument landing at 1730 just before dark. Damage: Port bow stove-in, bombardiers window and shutter broken. Lower three horizontal members of rudders bent upward aft of rudder hinge post, plastic panels of port waist hatch broken. Crew Ok. He landed at sea to pick up a hospital patient from a Naval ship, then took off for base. While climbing through a fog layer, the radar was turned off in order to use power for transmitting take-off report to base. He was last heard from at 0200 29 Jun when he sent a routine hourly report. He was then estimated to be just starting the inbound leg sector about 400-miles away.
