MishapsMISHAPs: 23 AUG 51 A/C: PBY-5A pby Location: NAS Atlanta, Georgia Strike: Yes BUNO: 46498 CAUSE: Night overland navigation flight. The plane became airborne in 1600 to 1900-ft on runway #9, Nas Atlanta,Ga. The plane reached at estimated 10-ft above the runway and remained at that altitude for about 100yds. It then flew back into the runway, nose low and slid down the runway on its main gear and the nose section of the keel for 503-ft. The plane then slide off the end of the runway, crashing through a small bank of dirt and rocks, and plunged over the embankment at the end of runway #9. It crashed near the bottom of the embankment, coming to rest on its back. The plane burst into flames immediately. "Strike" Crew & pass killed: Pilot LT George Von Glahn USNR, Lt John C. Griffin USNR, Lt(jg) Harold B. Calhoun USNR, Lt Joseph D. Ratterree USNR, AT2 Alex J. Butard USNR, ADEAA Thomas V. Green USNR, AD2 Edward C. Smith USNR, and AL2 Norman F. Moroy USNR.
