The Navy is scheduling the establishment of a Squadron Augment Unit (SAU) attached to VP-30 for 1 October, 2004. Final numbers have yet to be released, but the SAU is likely to total near 150 personnel composed of Officer and Enlisted instructors and maintenance personnel. The SAU has begun recruiting the advance party of 20 maintainers in the AD, AE, AT, AM, and AME rates. If you are interested in serving as a Selected Reservist in VP-30 SAU, have P-3 NEC's and P-3 experience within the last 6 years, and are within drilling distance of NAS Jacksonville, Florida, please call Naval Reserve Recruiting Area SE at 904-542-3320 ext 490 or the SAU OIC at 904-542-0990.

On this date, a Japanese Army twin-engined bomber was coming to land at Laog Airfield on northwestern Luzon, Philippines. The pilot was circling the airfield in preparation to land. An American patrol plane, possibly a PBY, circled this Japanese bomber, but did not fire. The Japanese crew withheld their fire. The Japanese pilot could see the American pilot looking at him. He was wearing sunglasses. The American aircraft rocked its wings and the Japanese crewmen waved their silk mufflers for sparing them. Now, this Japanese pilot (79 years old) wants to personally thank the crew of the American plane. It sounds strange,but it really happened! I don't think it was a Privateer. It must have been a Cat. NOTICE: "...I am seeking information about an officer who served in VP-71. His name: Lt. (jg) P. S. Van Beurschaten I write the reader inquiry column for KNIFE WORLD magazine. A reader in Florida found a large unusual machete there (jpegs available by email). Length about 30 inches. Flaring double-edged blade; steel guard; light wooden handles. Front wooden handle lightly ink stamped U(anchor)S; deep stamped (sunburst)/ BARR BROS. & CO./ OAKLAND,CAL. Leather scabbard. Hand written on scabbard: Van Beurschaten, P. S. Lt. (jg) VP-71 Barr Bros. was a small butcher knife manufacturing firm, founded by Hugh & William Barr in Eugene, Oregon, in 1891; relocated to Oakland, California, in 1911; continued in business after WWII. This is very much a non-standard military knife of the wartime period: bigger, different design, different maker, higher quality, than other issue machetes. I have two questions: 1) Does anyone have any information about Lt. Van Beurschaten -- when and where he served in VP-71, any anecdotes about him? 2) Does anyone have any information about this machete -- who designed it, who purchased it, where and when, for what distribution? My GUESS would be that it (and others like it) would have been purchased while VP-71 was at Mare Island, early in WWII, since Oakland is the nearest large city. Anybody know? Anybody else have one?
