UPDATE "...My uncle, my father's only brother, was in VP-82 in the fall of 1942 stationed at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. His plane was patrolling for U-Boats and disappeared on August 29-30, 1942, cause unknown. He was only 18 years old, and his name was James Edward Browning from Effingham, Illinois. If anyone knew my uncle, or has photos of him from those final months of his life, I would love to make copies and try to fill in some history...David Browning browningdr@mtzion.k12.il.us..." MishapsMISHAPs: 23 OCT 42 A/C: PV-1 ventura Location: NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island Strike: Yes BUNO: 33946 Cause: Familiarization flight. Take-off was normal until plane became airborne when it started to swerve to the left. Pilot was unable to maintain straight flight path so he closed starboard throttle and advanced port throttle. Plane settled to left edge of the runway, bounced, swerved to right and landed heading straight down runway in a left skid. Pilot closed port throttle and applied brakes vigorously. Plane crossed end of runway and skidded across sandy stretch of ground, a concrete road, two rail road tracks and came to stop with landing gear sheared off. "Strike" Inspection disclosed engine cowl flaps were in full open position and rudder tab set at seven degrees to left. Crew Ok: Pilot Lt Edmonds David USN, Lt(jg) Johnathan R. Smith A-V(N) USNR, AMM3c Edward S. Obbish (FO) USN, and Sea2c John S. Palancia (FO) USN. Contributed by Terry pb4y-2@sbcglobal.net [18FEB2002]

MishapsMISHAPs: 05 DEC 42 A/C: PV-1 ventura Location: NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada Strike: Yes BUNO: 33938 Cause: Routine patrol. Pilot approached field on instruments after being recalled because of bad weather, with a snow squall was rapidly closing in and darkness approaching, Pilot decided to land immediately, using somewhat of a down-wind approach. Wheels touched down about center of the 5,000-ft runway, plane hit in a three point attitude with about 1500-ft left. Pilot applied brakes, but traction was lost because of icy runway. Plane skidded off end of runway, gear struts collapsed, bottom of bombay compartment ripped out and distorting bombay doors. "Strike" Crew Ok. Pilot Lt(jg) David W. Cottlien A-V(N) USNR, Lt(jg) W. F. Jennings, ARM1c J. W. Aleshkowtch (FO), AMM2c W. H. Lee (FO), and Sea2c K. C. Nelson (FO). Contributed by Terry pb4y-2@sbcglobal.net [18FEB2002]
