DINGEE, AMSC Carroll R. Retired jeepdriver@embarqmail.com "...I served with VP-11 (1965-1969) at NAS Brunswick, Maine. I was a shop type maintenance crewmember (flying minimum time on test flights) on the P2. In 1967 we transitioned to the P-3's having gone through the AM maintenance courses, I thouhgt I'd like to become a Flight Engineer. So, in August 1967 I departed for VP-30 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland and made it through Ground Phase without a hitch. Unfortunately, I "flunked out" during the OFT and Performance Charts! I left VP-30 and rejoined VP-11 in disgrace. When my CO and I talked things over, I told him that up to this point in my life I did not know I needed glasses (can't work the charts if you can't see them clearly). So, to make a long story short, I got glasses, went back to VP-30 in 1968 and made it as a FE! To my knowledge I am the ONLY person to go through FE training a second time during the transition envelope for a squadron and succesfully complete the course. (VP-30 probably still would like to say no one ever did it, but go back and check the records---I did it). Thought you might find my 10 minutes of fame and glory interesting). I served with VP-23 (12/1970-07/1974) - best tour of sea duty I ever had in 22+ years of service! Spent most of my tour as FE on CAC-8. PPC C. C. Nute (he went on to be C.O. of a west coast VP Squadron.) My last contact with him (or any of our old crew) was in 1980 while serving with VF-143 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) in the Indian ocean. I also served with VX-1 (1974-1977) and spent most os my time on the Line Crew. My wife, Betty, was President of the Enlisted Wives Club while we were there. We both still have many fond memories of our tour there (anyone remember the Pig Roast?). I retired out of VF-43 NAS Oceana, Va. in 1984. I am now retired and living (with wife Betty and you guys said it would never last) in Ocala, Fl. I would like to hear from former Shipmates..." I received the attached email from Linda Embach last night, regarding AWC Chuck Embach's sudden death Thursday October 18, 2007. I know we've always considered Chuck to be a good friend, valued Shipmate and bright spot in our memories of our VP-17. He always had a smile and cheerful words to share. If any of you don't exactly recall, AWC Chuck Embach worked in the Ops Dept and did his daily magic with our flight schedule during our '75-78 deployments. OTT, Tony totter@pacbell.net "...I served as an AO Aircrewman with VX-1 at NAS Key West, FL, then with VP-47, at NAS Moffett Field, California. While serving in VX-1, I was fortunate to visit 52 countries and five continents in two years, testing and evaluating, what was then the new P-3C. The Navy even sent me to a, "Training School," at Lockheed, in Burbank, CA, just ten miles from my home in Pasadena. My parents and friends, began calling me, "The Admiral," as I returned to the Lockheed Aircraft facilities many times, during the two years I was assigned to VX-1. My fellow crew members (Crew 5) flew daily into the infamous, "Bermuda Triangle," with no problem. I was just a "punk kid" of 19 years-old and yet visited the top and bottom of the Earth, as well as virtiously every part of the world in between. While flying, I tested the binariy code of ASW warfare, and each of the sonobouy devices, one of which blew up in my face. It was quite an incident. The internal compression tube blew me off my feet, but with no injury. However, it threw a piece of shrapnel through the overhead bulking. The crew and Lockheed supervisors soon discovered the ejection round for the internal Sonobouy chute was too powerful (like placing a .45 bullet in a .38 pistol). Yes I loved every day I was there. I was then reassigned to VP-47 at NAS Moffett Field, California. I spent my last years in the Navy teaching the AO Shop about the P-3C. Our crew received the first, "E" (excellence) rating for an ASW P-3C aircraft. I took a flight home every weekend, to visit my girlfriend (my first wife) and parents. With just 11 months remaining, VP-47 was assigned to NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. I spent the next and my last year in the Navy, flying ASW tracts in the Tonkin Gulf. The squadron was then reassigned to the NAS in the Alutiaten Islands. Talk about a culture shock, and a physical shock. The squadron went from 100 degree and 100 degree huminity to 47 below zero in one week. I remember playing football in 21 below zero weather, thinking this was wonderful. Although these memories are nearly 40 years-old, I still recall each hour in the air, every crew member by name, every flight to another country, every bar, barracks and "belly load." For me, from 18 to 21 years-old, it was the time of my life. For America, it was a time of change. I am proud to say I was a part of the American Military and moreover, an Aviation Ordanance Aircrewman on the Lockeed P-3C. It was a time to remember..." [29JUN2004]
