A BIT OF HISTORY: "...The US Navy's only Antarctic squadron, Air Development Squadron Six (VXE-6) was decommissioned this past March after nearly 45 years service in the polar regions. BUNO 148320, was used in 1963 to make a historic one time flight, non-stop from Capetown, South Africa to McMurdo Station,Antarctica. The flight took nearly 15 hours to cover the 4700 miles mostly over ice and water.(see March 1964 issue of National Geographic Magazine). The crew received Air Medals and induction into the Explorers Club. Then on my second deployment my crew was sent to Greenland (summer of 1974), again in 320, to haul ice cores back to the States. On this mission an urgent call came to rescue men and equipment from a floating DEW line ice-floe in the Arctic Ocean. The rescue was successfully completed flying from Thule, out to the ice island known as "T-3", and then taking off again to Point Barrow, Alaska. It was exciting but very dangerous and involved several round-trip flights. Since no recognition was ever considered by the USN, I would like to contact former crew members to substantiate a belated acknowledgement of this feat for us all, but mostly for the Enlisted Crew who were volunteers..."
