VP AircraftAIRCRAFT: WV ThumbnailCameraNADU WV-2E BUNO: 135754 "...This is NADU's planner 3, a WV-2 assigned to us in January of 1955. The photo was taken on the mat outside the LTA hanger at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts. She was set up with newly developed radar which could detect a submarine's snorkel at a couple of hundred miles depending on sea conditions. We used her to measure the radar's performance in all kinds of weather conditions. She was equipped with a pressurized head, bunks and a complete galley. On some occasions we flew her on missions that lasted close to 40 hours. The crew took turns turning out some great meals. The one problem in cooking aboard her was that, at the altitudes we flew, the low cabin pressure would keep the grease temperature from getting hot enough to brown the french fries. This aircraft flew across the Atlantic and back in support of NADU's ZPG-2 Airship “Snowbird” on her record-breaking odyssey from 04 March to 15 March 1957..." It had forward shooting guns, a rear firing cannon and could carry a bomb load mounted to the pylons under the wings. It was supplied with forward looking search radar, forward looking gun aim radar and rear looking radar. This particular NADU aircraft was set up to support Minneapolis Honeywell in the development of electronics which would allow an aircraft to follow energized high voltage electric lines..." VP AircraftAIRCRAFT: NADU FH-7 ThumbnailCameraNADU FH2 BUNO: 123305 "...This is NADU's Planner 10, an FH-2 Banshee, being refueled on the mat at NAS South Weymouth, Massachusetts. The sailor sitting on the wing is plane captain Maestro. The Banshee held the altitude record for jet powered aircraft at 52,00 feet for a short while. This particular aircraft was rigged up with electronics in support of a MIT/Raytheon tracking project. If you look carefully you can see a wire antenna running from the top of the tail fin to just behind the canopy. This was coupled to a transmitter installed in the fuselage, which enabled the engineers at MIT to track this aircraft even when it moved around the air station on the ground..." While flying about 160 miles out to sea off Cape Cod we lost the starboard engine, wound up dumping both wing tip tanks into the sea and making an emergency landing at Otis Air Force Base on the tip of the cape..." It was 403 feet long, 118 feet wide, and had a gas capacity of 1 1/2 million cubic feet. It weighted 48,000 pounds, and it carried a crew of 21. I believe it had just transferred to VS-36 NAS Norfolk, Virginia when this one collapsed. Upon further reading, I learned that there were more than one of these, and that another 3W had crashed at sea, also in 1960, killing most of the crew. I don't know the unit it would have been assigned to. Further research shows that there were four of these airships built and the ne that crashed at sea was BUNO: 144242 from NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey killing 18 of the 21 man crew..." COBANE, ATN2 B. It also set a new endurance record of 264.2 hours of continuous non-refueled flight. We traveled Northeast just south of Greenland, just South of Iceland, turned south off the coast of Portugal to Cape Yubi Africa, thru the Canary Islands, just North of the Cape Verde Islands, then West to pass just North of the Dominican Republic, making land fall at Miami Beach, across the everglades to the Gulf, then South to land at NAS key west..."
