While performing anti-submarine duty in the South Atlantic from Sept 1943 - Oct 1944, our crew logged approximately 2000 flying hours on patrols seeking German U-boats that would lie in wait for a convoy. Flying grid patrols took us half way across the Atlantic between NAF Natal, Brazil and Dakar, Africa. We were very heavily loaded down for these patrols with extra gasoline, depth charges, ammo, adn a candle power search light. When wwe picked up a bleep on our radar, we approached the target at low altitude, then within one mile the light was activated and if the bleep was identified as a U-boat, we continued our run, strafing the U-boat deck, then dropping our load of depth charges.
On one such patrol, St. Valentine's day 1944, we were ordered out to search for survivors of a plane crash at sea near Bahia, Brazil. After several hours of searching, our plane experienced a violent explosion - the starboard engine blew a piston, causing a wall of orange searing flames to engulf the engine. Because of the swift and competent actions of our plane commander LT(jg) George Scott and Edgar Boyd, and the rest of the crew members, we began to save lives and the Martin Mariner PBM flying boat.
We were losing altitude fast, the plane hovering just below stalling speed; to extinguish the flames, Scotty and the flight engineer feathered the engine while the rest of the crew jettioned all ammunition and threw overboard all five 50 caliber machine guns. After the depth charges were jettisoned, I was ordered to crawl thru a hole and passage way and inspect and insure that all eight bombs fell; if not, I was to manually release them. Fortunately, all the depth charges fell out and we were able to maintain flying speed. It was touch and go whether we could make the 250 miles back to home base. When Scotty asked if we should ditch the plane at sea, we unanimously agreed, "no, let's attempt to save the plane and make it home."
We continued on for two and a half hours, not even attempting to move. I really grew into manhood this day, prior to this I thought of death as something happening to somebody else, not to some 18 year-old. I will always remember that putrid strange acidtaste after the flames were extinguished - it was a taste that you have experienced near death.
