"...COX, LCDR Warren M...Warren M. Cox: August 5, 1919 - June 7, 2011 - On December 26, 1944 Mike Cox was flying his VPB-20 PBM Mariner on a night patrol mission when he spotted eight Japanese warships steaming in line. The Japanese raiding force consisted of the cruisers Ashigara and Oyodo and five destroyers. The Japanese force was attempting to shell the landing beach at Mindoro in the Philippines. Mike's bombs would not release and sometime later, after losing an engine, he landed his plane in Mangarin Bay, where he was immediately hit by gunfire from an enemy plane. Mike's Plane Captain was mortally wounded, the plane sank and the surviving crew members spent the night in the water before being picked up the next morning. As a result of his service in World War II Mike Cox was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals. Warren Michael Cox, Lcdr. USN (Ret) of Coronado went on his final patrol June 7, 2011. He died of natural causes at Coronado Sharp Hospital. He was 91. Mike, as his friends all knew him, was born August 5, 1919 in Silver City, New Mexico to Marie and Warren Cox. His father was an auditor for the United States Forest Service. He attended New Mexico State Teacher's College High School in Silver City, New, Mexico. After graduation he enrolled at Bakersfield Junior College and, while a student there, obtained an appointment to West Point Military Academy. Unfortunately, he did not pass the physical. In 1939 he joined the Army and was stationed with the Eighth Calvary Regiment, First Calvary Division, at Fort Bliss, Texas. After serving one year in the Army Mike enrolled at the University of New Mexico, where he played on the Lobo Tennis Team. Subsequent to the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Mike joined the Navy and was designated a naval aviator on November 13, 1942 at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. Mike served two combat tours during WWII. The first was as navigator of a PBY Catalina in VP-23 operating out of Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. His second tour was as Patrol Plane Commander flying the PBM Mariner in VPB-20 out of the Philippines. In 1946 he married Virginia Day of Winslow, Arizona, a secretary for the Santa Fe Railway. They settled in Monterey, California while he attended navy line school. They had two children. Mike's navy duty assignments included Naval Air Transport Service (NATS), Guam, and NAS North Island, San Diego, California where he flew the P5M Marlin. He was also Ground Control Approach Officer at North Island and Combat Information Officer aboard the Carrier Midway (CVA-41) during the 1958-1959 Quemoy Matsu Taiwan Strait Crisis. His final duty station was as Administrative Officer of VRF-32 Squadron at North Island. Upon retirement from the Navy Mike continued his studies at San Diego State College. There he obtained a Bachelors Degree and teaching credential in mathematics. He then taught math analysis and geometry at the newly opened Castle Park High School in Chula Vista. In addition he taught night mathematics classes at Southwestern College and coached the Castle Park tennis team. While teaching at Castle Park Mike received a National Science Foundation stipend to attend summer sessions at Tulane University where he obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching in mathematics. Following his training in computer programming at Tulane University, Mike started the first computer programming class at Castle Park. During his days at Castle Park Mike enjoyed filming football games, playing tennis at the Hotel del Coronado and programming his TRS80 computer. After retirement from teaching he spent many hours with friends, whether it be on the tennis court, the Coronado Golf Course or at the Burger King Restaurant. He became a familiar sight on his three-wheeled bike around town. He always had a smile. "Mike really knew how to play the game of tennis," said Ben Press, former tennis professional at the Hotel Del Coronado. Press taught Mike's son Rusty when he was a junior tennis player. "Mike and I played many a doubles match together. He was a very smart doubles strategist," said Press. "He played late into life, until he could physically no longer run down the ball. He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him." Mike Cox is survived by his son Glenn "Rusty" Cox of Coronado. His wife Virginia and daughter Michele predeceased him. At his request, Mike's ashes will be spread over the Gila National Forest outside of Silver City. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 13, at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course. As published in the online edition of the Coronado Eagle & Journal, Thursday, July 28, 2011..." Contributed by CK Glen F. Pritchett coronadokids@gmail.com [01AUG2011]

I also served in VP-4 from July 1954 to June 1956...I enlisted in the Navy in 1948 and retired in 1970 as an ADR1. My first exposure to VPs was in July 1954. I graduated from B school and got orders to VP-4 at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington I got married all in July. I had never heard of Oak Harbour, but anyway it was a beautiful place. I started flying as a 2nd Mech shortly after I got there. We had P2V-5's with 20mm in the nose and tail, and a 50 cal on top. We flew to Fallon for gunnery quals. They had us fireing at a target towed by a JD. We deployed to NAS Iwakuni, Japan in July of 1955. We had a great crew. CDR Woods was the PPC and Chief Pinkey Adams was the Plane Captain. He got orders to shore duty right after we got to japan, so I became the Plane Captain of Crew 7. We flew a lot of patrols off the coast of Russia during the six months we were there. Our big reward was when we were relieved to come home. Our skipper, CDR Davis got us the ok to take the long way home. We had a 12 plane squadron and we staggered the departure 24 hours. Our first stop was NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan, then NS Sangley Point, Philippines, then Singapore, and on to Australia where we made three stops. Then we started that long trip home. I don't know how we did it, but we managed to get all 12 planes back to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington on the same day - a miracle. I guess Xmas just being around the corner had something to do with it. I had been married for about a year and a half so my wife and Ii had a great XXmas that year. Came back off leave in January 1956 and we started changing over to the P2V-5F with a J-34 hung under each wing. They sure made a lot of difference on take offs. I left the squadron in June 1956 for shore duty at NAS Memphis, Tennessee. I stayed there for three years and transferred to VP-23 in June 1959, which is another story..." DINGEE, AMSC Carroll R. Retired jeepdriver@embarqmail.com "...I served with VP-11 (1965-1969) at NAS Brunswick, Maine. I was a shop type maintenance crewmember (flying minimum time on test flights) on the P2. In 1967 we transitioned to the P-3's having gone through the AM maintenance courses, I thouhgt I'd like to become a Flight Engineer. So, in August 1967 I departed for VP-30 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland and made it through Ground Phase without a hitch. Unfortunately, I "flunked out" during the OFT and Performance Charts! I left VP-30 and rejoined VP-11 in disgrace. When my CO and I talked things over, I told him that up to this point in my life I did not know I needed glasses (can't work the charts if you can't see them clearly). So, to make a long story short, I got glasses, went back to VP-30 in 1968 and made it as a FE! To my knowledge I am the ONLY person to go through FE training a second time during the transition envelope for a squadron and succesfully complete the course. (VP-30 probably still would like to say no one ever did it, but go back and check the records---I did it). Thought you might find my 10 minutes of fame and glory interesting). I served with VP-23 (12/1970-07/1974) - best tour of sea duty I ever had in 22+ years of service! Spent most of my tour as FE on CAC-8. PPC C. C. Nute (he went on to be C.O. of a west coast VP Squadron.) My last contact with him (or any of our old crew) was in 1980 while serving with VF-143 aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) in the Indian ocean. I also served with VX-1 (1974-1977) and spent most os my time on the Line Crew. My wife, Betty, was President of the Enlisted Wives Club while we were there. We both still have many fond memories of our tour there (anyone remember the Pig Roast?). I retired out of VF-43 NAS Oceana, Va. in 1984. I am now retired and living (with wife Betty and you guys said it would never last) in Ocala, Fl. I would like to hear from former Shipmates..." EATON. ADCS Richard Retired RichardGM211@aol.com "...I started my career with VXN-8. In those days it was called OASU, but I was there as a ground-pounder for all the subsequent name changes. I left the squadron just as we were getting the P-3's and went to NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island and joined the Checkmates of VS-22. Made the final cruises of both the USS Wasp and the USS Intrepid and onto the USS Saratoga. We locked the doors when we left NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island and on to NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida. I was dragged kicking and screaming off the Sara in '76 while on a Med cruise because I received orders to RTC Great Lakes for duty as a Company Commander for 3 years. I was assigned to VP-23 in late 1979. I caught up with the Seahawks on deployment in NAS Keflavik, Iceland. Served for a while as the Line CPO and then was picked up for local instuctor duty TAD to CPWL.
