Went to Flight Engineer school in 87 at NAS Moffett Field, California, EGO-101 was still being taught. Joined VP-6 Blue Sharks in NAS Adak, Alaska in the worst winter in 2000 years in December 87 with Raul Addoms, it was an FE open book exam every flight. Survived a deployment to NAS Cubi Point, Philippines and NSF Diego Garcia in the summer of '89. Deployed again to NAS Adak, Alaska in the winter of '91 with Ron Wood, saw Thule and had a great time doing the Blue Nose initiation with Brad Baca. Went on to VPU-2 in '92 with the Whipped Dogs with Scotty Mensen, I was on the road ALOT, and the kangaroo courts are a fond tradition. Transferred to VP-30 as an FE Instructor from 95-98, did Fleet IUT and Fleet NATOPS with Rock, had a great time on the team. He was raised in Pine Bush, NY and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1982. Following designation as a Naval Aviator in February 1984, his first operational assignment was with VP-24. During this tour as a "Batman", he completed deployments to NAS Bermuda and NAS Sigonella, Sicily and served as the Pilot Training, Pilot NATOPS, and Safety/NATOPS Officer. In March 1988, Captain Adrion transferred to the "Pro's Nest" of VP-30 serving as Tactical Training Team Pilot, Aircraft Division Officer and Pilot Training Officer. His following sea duty was as the Operations Administration Officer aboard the USS SARATOGA where he qualified as an Officer of the Deck and deployed to the Mediterranean Sea in support of NATO operations in Bosnia. In August 1993, Captain Adrion reported to the "Screaming Eagles" of VP-1 in NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii, serving as the Command Services and Maintenance Officer. During his tour, he deployed to the western Pacific and Indian Oceans in support of United Nations' sanctions against Iraq. Following his Department Head tour, Captain Adrion was assigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, DC to serve as the VP / VQ Combat Placement Officer. In July 1997, he was selected to attend the Marine Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA where he completed a Masters Degree in Military Science. Captain Adrion reported to NAS Brunswick, Maine in March of 1999, serving as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of VP-26. From April 2001 to March 2003, he was Training Officer for Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Force Atlantic and from March 2003 to March 2005 he was assigned to the Joint Staff as the Deputy Division Chief and Division Chief for the J-3 Reconnaissance Operations Division..." "...ALBENZI, AT2 Angelo...To all who knew AT2 Angelo Albenzi who served with VP-24 as an IFT from 1977 to 1979 and was searching for those of the squadron that served with him. After avionics training at NATTC Memphis, Tennessee from 1975-1976, he went for additional training VP-30 NAS Jacksonville, Florida, 1976-1977 and became attached to VP-24 as IFT, AT2, from 1977-1979. From there to NADU, 1979-1981. Angelo fought a good fight, from the very beginning when he was diagnosed with cancer as a child. He managed to stay free from it almost until the end. Angelo went on after his service to obtain a B.A.in Accounting from PennState University and worked in the field until his late 30's. It was about that time that I think the cancer had probably started to come back, but he was unaware of ti until about 2 years prior to his death. Angelo died in June of 2003. I knew him for the past 13 years and would be happy to relate details of his life to any of his former crewmembers and comrades that are interested. "...ALLEN, Gary Don (VP-4, VP-7 and VP-30) - Gary Don Allen, 74, of Brentwood, TN, passed away Feb. 28, 2012, in Tennessee State Veterans Home, Murfreesboro, Tenn. He was born Aug. 12, 1937, in Columbus, son of the late Don and Helen (Rotroff) Allen. His sister Karen Fastnaught, of Toledo, survives. Also surviving, his spouse Linda Mashburn Allen, of Brentwood. Gary was a member of Franklin First United Methodist Church, Franklin, Tenn., and past member of First Christian Church of Sandusky. He graduated from Findlay High School and attended John Carroll University in Cleveland and Findlay College in Findlay, Ohio. While living in Ohio, he belonged to many community clubs, including the Sandusky Yacht Club, Toastmasters, Power Squadron, and American Legion. Gary worked for Chef's Pantry and then for Stein, Inc. for many years as the director of Human Resources. He owned the photography studio "Images Unlimited" photographing weddings and portraits. Gary was proud to serve his country in the Army Reserves and then in the Navy. He was presented with a medal and citation from the U.S. Navy for meritorious achievement as an air crewman of a P-3 patrol aircraft during a special reconnaissance mission off the coast of South Korea for directly detecting and subsequent destruction of an enemy infiltrator surface craft. His efforts were instrumental in bringing his damaged aircraft safely to a landing at a friendly base. His skillful airmanship, courage and devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He was authorized to wear the combat "V". During his career he was presented with several other medals and citations. Gary served in various U.S. Navy Patrol Squadrons including: VP-30, VP-7 and VP-4. He was involved during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and as an air crewman aboard a VP-7 P2V Neptune aircraft assigned to aerial surveillance of Russian ships in route to the island of Cuba carrying missiles. One of the photos he took from aboard a VP-7 aircraft was the one shown during President Kennedy's news conference on national TV during his announcement of the Cuban Blockade. Gary was an amateur radio operator (HAM) with the call sign of KB8APU. He enjoyed his experiences operating from various locations. He worked with operators near home base locations to provide members of his squadron with the ability to contact their families via radio from the squadron's deployed locations. His operating included operations while aboard naval aircraft. He was not able to utilize his amateur radio hobby during the last few years as he would have liked to. The children with whom Gary shared his life and loved all survive him. They are Deb (Bob) Redmond, of Port Clinton, Don Allen, of Sandusky, and Dawn (Allan) Peterson, of Fremont, whose mother Sarah Crawfis Hartley, survives. Kim Fredrick, of Castalia, and Chuck (Lisa Rutger) from Vermilion, whose mother Viola Sommers Allen, preceded him in death and whose father Chuck Rutger survives. Christy Kaser-Geiger, of Franklin, whose mother Linda Mashburn Allen and father the Rev. Larry J. Kaser survive. Gary loved his grandchildren, all of whom survive. They are Greg Allen, of Toledo, Bryce and Breanne Fredrick, of Castalia, Andrea, Bethany, and Laura Rutger, of Vermilion, Noah, Evan, Corinne and Nathan Geiger, of Springhill, Tenn., and Brook and Brandi Peterson, of Fremont. He also loved his great-grandchildren, all of whom survive. They are Zack and Trenton Peterson, of Fremont. One nephew, Jeff Fastnaught, of Toledo, survives. One niece Chris Fastnaught is deceased. A memorial service facilitated by Woodfin Funeral Chapel and Ransom Funeral Home will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at First Christian Church on Hayes Avenue, Sandusky, with the Rev. Don Linn officiating. Burial will be at the Margaretta Township, Castalia Cemetery on Bardwell Road in Castalia, immediately following the memorial service. A time for visitation with the family at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall will be after the graveside service. Donations to your church or favorite charity are suggested by the family. A Special thank you is given to the administration, doctors, and staff of the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro, for making the last year of Gary's life as enjoyable as possible. I was sidetracked for 1965-1968 by Instructor Duty with NAMTRAGRU Det 1015 NAS Lemoore, California. I was one of the original new rate "AW"s changing from ATC to AWC in 1968. Soon after I received orders to VP-19 NAS Moffett Field, California. This was the beginning of a very colorful and rewarding career. I served in VP-19 from 1968-1975 with deployments to NAS Adak, Alaska; NAS Iwakuni, Japan; NAS Cubi Point, Philippines; Naha, Okinawa; NAS Cubi Point, Philippines again with detachments to NSF Diego Garcia and Utapao, Thailand. "...BAXLEY, CMC Frank ...Frank Baxley, 64, died Feb. 12th, 2006 at his home in Lexington Park, Md. Frank is the son of the late John Lester Baxley Sr and Marguerite Brown Baxley of Marion Sc. Frank has worked for the government since 1961 - first as active duty Navy, and then as a civil servant at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. He joined Navy in 1961 and went through boot camp in San Diego. He attended Anti-Submarine Warfare electronics technician, advanced electronics training in NAS Millington, Tennessee. Followed with flight crew operator training in NAS Norfolk, Virginia and P2V specific training in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Frank's I first duty station as an operator was with VP-56 at NAS Norfolk, Virginia. Deployments included NS Rota, Spain, NAS Sigonella, Sicily, NAS Keflavik, Iceland, and detachments in NS Roosevelt Roads, PR, Crete, Greece, NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal, and NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While assigned to VP-56 Frank logged 5000 flight hours in 5 years. I After his arduous duty with VP-56 during the Cuban missile crisis, Frank transferred to VP-30 to attend 16 weeks of factory training for computer and data processing systems. After returning to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland he attended In-Flight Technician (IFT) training at NAMTRADET, NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. As an IFT with VP-24 he made four deployments to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. He was then assigned to NAMTRADET NAS Jacksonville, Florida as P-3C IFT and Weapon Systems Technician instructor. He also taught community college electronics theory and all related math necessary to get a First Class Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license. He then transferred to NAS Moffett Field, California VP-48 serving as the Maintenance/Material Control Senior Chief and Command Senior Chief when he retired from the NAVY. After retiring in 1982 from the NAVY he continued supporting the Maritime Surveillance Aircraft RM&S department for Naval Air Systems Command. In 1985 he then accepted his first Government Service position as Engineering Technician, Antisubmarine AlC Test Directorate for NATC serving as manager of the airborne advanced signal processor being developed for incorporation into the P-3 Update IV aircraft. With the initiation of the P-7A development in 1989, his duties expanded to include the oversight of concurrent integration of the Update IV avionics suite into the P-7A airframe design. 1993 he was promoted as an Engineering Technician, Force Warfare Aircraft Directorate, NAWCAD as the Technical Lead for the P-3C Anti-surface Warfare Improvement Program (AlP). He developed the groundbreaking acquisition strategy based on the extensive use of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf/Non-Development Items. Went on all the dets I could, to the PI, NSF Diego Garcia (Dodge City), all the inflight stops of Osan, Yakota, Singapore, Bangkok, etc. I then transfered to NRL-FSD and NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. In 1981 met my wife and had a boy that has a Navy birth certificate. In 1983 transfered to NAS Jacksonville, Florida to pursue a career as a P-3 Flight Engineer. Bayless graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1979 with a degree in Systems Engineering. He was designated a Naval Aviator in April of 1981 and completed Fleet Replacement training at VP-30 in November of that same year. From December 1981 to December 1984, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was assigned to VP-16 in NAS Jacksonville, Florida. During his tour he was designated a Patrol Plane Commander and Mission Commander making deployments to NAS Bermuda, NS Rota, Spain, and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. The "War Eagles" were recognized with a Battle E, the Golden Wrench, and three Meritorious Unit Commendations during this period. In January of 1985, he reported to VT-27 in NAS Corpus Christi, Texas as an Instructor Pilot in the T-34C Mentor. As a Flight Leader and solo check pilot, he instructed in Basic Familiarization, Radio Instruments, Night Navigation, and Precision Acrobatics. After affiliating with the Naval Reserve, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless reported to the "Executioners" of VP-93 in November of 1989 at NAF Detroit, Michigan. During this tour, he served as Department Head for Administration, Operations, and Maintenance. He led armed patrols in Operation Sharp Guard supporting UN sanctions against the former Yugoslav Republics and also flew sorties during Support Democracy and Able Manner supporting the UN sanctioned embargo of Haiti. With the disestablishment of VP-93, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless received orders in the spring of 1994 to VP-68 at NAF Andrews, Maryland. He served as an Executive Assistant and then as the Executive Officer of the "Black Hawks". While attached to VP-68, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless supported multiple operations throughout the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to include counter narcotics missions from Roosevelt Roads, Key West, and Howard AFB in Panama. In June of 1996, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless reported aboard VP-66 in NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, as the PCO and took command the following month. The "Liberty Bells" won the CNO Safety Award for 1996 and 1997 as well as the MPA International Symposium Competition for ASW Excellence during his tenure. In November of 1997, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless assumed the duties of Executive Officer NR CINCUSNAVEUR 513 (CNE 513) at Great Lakes, Ill. The command received the Leo V. Bilger Award for outstanding Surface Augment Unit that year. During this period, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless was selected to become the first East Coast Facilitator of the Navy's Culture Workshop process representing COMNAVAIRLANT. His next assignment was CO of NR Tactical Support Center 472 (TSC 472) from October 1998 to September of 1999. TSC 472 provided watch officers for NATO Operations Allied Force and Noble Anvil from TSC Sigonella in support of highly visible Balkan missions. Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless then commanded NR Battle Group Staff Eight (BGS-8) at Forest Park, Ill., from October 1999 to September 2001. While supporting COMCRUDESGRU EIGHT, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Bayless deployed with IKEBATGRU and also served as the Deputy JFACC for Unified Endeavor. He subsequently took command of NR CINCUSNAVEUR Joint Task Force Contingency Unit 413 (CNE JTFCU 413) in October 2001. During this command tour, Rear Adm. (Sel.) Turned out to be just what I needed. Nothing like jumping on an old ship (USS INCHON) and going straight into a combat zone (Kosovo). The USS TARAWA was much nicer. Or was that because I was no longer the Flight Deck coordinator? HA! My last tour brought me back to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland at NAVAIR only to ride a desk 01-05. After a few months in the shop, and a tour through SERE school, I transferred to flight crew 9 as a FE in training. We immediately deployed to NS Sangley Point, Philippines / U-Tapao Royal Thailand Air Force Base, Thailand and flew Market Time missions from June 1968 till December 1968. The squadron that we replaced had lost two planes to enemy fire, but we were able to complete the deployment without major incident. Although there were more than a few "interesting" flights and extracurricular activities in the Philippines, Thailand and Japan. Upon return, I went through the FE training at VP-30, returning to VP-49 and crew 9 as a qualified FE. We transitioned to the P-3C and I became an instructor engineer before deploying to NAS Keflavik, Iceland from June 1970 till November 1970. We spent many hours tracking Russian nuclear subs out of the North Sea and had the opportunity to visit many interesting places in Iceland and Europe. Crew 9 was the NATOPS crew, I was the FE on nearly every check and test flight from 1969 till I got out in February 1971, to return to college. Many of those flights were memorable..." He proudly served with VU-5 at NAS Atsugi, Japan from 1955 to 1959, VU-7 at NAS North Island, San Diego, California and Brown Field in 1954, VP-4 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii at NAF Naha, Okinawa, Japan from 1962 to 1963, VP-30 at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland) and retired out of VP-50 at NAS Moffett Field, California in 1973. After 3 years in the Dallas organization, and many trips to NAS Point Mugu, California, I shipped over to department head tour with VP-45 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida ( NS Rota, Spain - NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal 90, Desert Shield 90-91). I got laid off from Rockwell in 1981, then worked as a Field Service Engineer for the Associated Press in Iowa for 7 years and back to Richmond, Virginia for one year. Left the AP in 1990 and did a variety of jobs for about 5 years, including a little woodworking shop where I made clocks for specialty orders and crafts shows. Moved to Tappahannock (on the Rappahannock River) in 1994, got divorced in 1999, remarried in 2001 and my wife and I live in Tappahannock, but not on the river anymore and we have a small business making custom caps and t-shirts. After VP-30 & FE school in '78 I came back and eventually got the FE job with CAC-5. Was at VP-44 for the transition from the last P-3"A" to the first "Charlie Update II". It was great because we could do it the new computerized way or when that broke down we could do it the old way. Was on the Iceland deployment and the "West PAC" deployment before I was restationed at VX-1 NAS Patuxent River, Maryland from 1980 to 1983. Left the VP Navy in 1983 to do 1 tour with VA-66 "Cecil Field" on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN-69 before I ended up with limited duty and finally a "Medical" Discharge in 1987. I've since been to college for a "music education" degree and am a substitute teacher in Florida and a church music director. Love this site and miss the VP's. "...CALL, Larry William...My Dad, Larry William Call, passed away January 17th, 2013. Dad served in the United States Navy from 1955 until his retirement in 1974, in Squadrons VP-45 and VP-30. He served two tours in the Vietnam War. After his retirement from the Navy, Larry became a rail car electrician with the Washington DC Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, retiring after 21 years. He was a member of the Hughesville American Legion #238, the Waldorf VFW #8810, the Mechanicsville Moose Lodge #495 and the Lexington Park Fleet Reserve #093. Dad enjoyed long drives in the country and sitting down by the water, with one of his favorite spots being Point Lookout in Scotland, Maryland. He loved vintage cars and enjoyed going to Bert's Diner whenever they had a car show. He loved to listen to bluegrass, country, jazz and classical music, as well as listening to talk radio. One of his favorite pastimes was debating politics with his family and friends. Dad instilled his love of knowledge and reading to all his children, as well as the desire to stay current with world events and politics. He enjoyed taking a sailing class at St. Mary's College as he felt a "sailor should really learn how to sail a boat". Dad also had a fondness for practical jokes and was extremely witty. Upon completion of MM "A" School he reported aboard USS John Paul Jones, DDG-32 and was subsequently selected to attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School, Newport Rhode Island. He was commissioned in Ensign in May 1981 upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Oceanography. Upon completion of flight training, Commander Carter was designated a Naval Aviator in November 1982. After completion of Fleet Replacement Squadron VP-30, he reported to VP-56 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. Flying the P-3C he made deployments to NS Rota, Spain; NAS Keflavik, Iceland; and NAS Sigonella, Sicily. During his tour he served in a variety of assignments including Flight Division Officer and Assistant Operations Officer. His last operational tour was highlighted by missions in support of the SIXTH Fleet Operations in the vicinity of Libya. In October 1986, Commander Carter reported to the Naval Academy as a Physical Education Instructor and Head Coach of the Academy's collegiate pistol team. Following his tour Commander Carter joined Oceanographic Development Squadron EIGHT, NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, where he served as Aviation Safety Officer and Safety/NATOPS Department Head. He qualified in the RP-3A/D, P-3B Mod and UP-3A aircraft completing numerous worldwide detachments in support of the Oceanographer of the Navy. Upon completion of P-3 weapons system and tactical training in December 1992, Commander Carter reported to VP-1 at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii where he served as Safety/NATOPS Department Head, Aircraft Maintenance Officer and Interim Squadron Executive Officer. He deployed to the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch and Operation Restore Hope. Commander Carter reported to Joint Task Force Six, Ft Bliss, Texas in November 1994 where he served as Regional Plans and Operations Division Chief. During his tour, he supported various Federal, State and local counterdrug law enforcement agencies throughout the United States in planning and executing DOD missions supporting the President's National Drug Control Strategy. In February 1998, Commander Carter joined the Strategy, Policy and Plans Directorate, U.S. Southern Command, Miami, Florida, where he served as Chief, Deliberate Plans Division and Deputy Director of Plans. He was responsible for the development, review and maintenance of all Concept and Functional Plans, as directed by the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff and Commander in Chief, U.S. Southern Command in order to meet national security objectives and support United States political/military policy for Central and South American and the Caribbean. CDR Carter's military awards include: Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2 Awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), and Various service related awards.
