A BIT OF HISTORY: VP-31 History "...Here's a photo from the "don't try this at home" file. I rediscovered this photo while moving, this week. I believe that the aircraft amy be from VP-31. They are about to fly over Hanger 2 at NAS Moffett Field, California, about 1972. Maybe other Moffetiers will have more accurate data on this shot. The shot is taken from the pilot's seat in a following P-3, obviously an agreed upon flight, as I can't remember any pilots who would deliberately get this close to another P-3 in flight..." A BIT OF HISTORY: "...Circa 1970...Patrol Squadron 31 was commissioned in June of 1960 at North Island, San Diego, and by early fall of that year was in full operation indoctrinating and training pilots, aircrewmen and maintenance personnel in current ASW patrol aircraft. During 1961 the operations of the Squadron expanded and late in that year VP-31 began the training of foreign air personnel. The first were memebers of the Royal Australian Air Force, followed by members of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, the Chilean Air Force, the Colombian Air Force, the Peruvian Air Force, the Spanish Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. In January of 1967 the Squadron moved to Moffett Field to replace their detachment which had been operating since 1963 to transition patrol squadrons from the oder SP-2H patrol aircraft to the new P-3's..."
