ADDIS, Craig A. craig.a.addis@saic.com "...I served with VP-17 NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii in 1979 as an airmen and VP-31 NAS Moffett Field, California for training and learning MAD, Difar/Lofar, and other ASW equipment for "I" Level maintainablity. Being an AX, which is not a part of the Navy rate designation today, made my job more rewarding knowing that to operate, search and find you must know how it works! All AW's and TACCO's were great to contribute ideas and their inputs to help keep the equipment in top shape. Being TDY to NAS's made "I" Level guys dealing with two commands vs. just one. Detached in 1980 to NAS Agana, Guam during one of the first terrorist strikes, the Iranian Hostage takeover. Vietnam Boat People and the Iranians kept us hopping in the Pacific from 1980 to 1981. Deployment to PI in 1981 was completed during the timeframe of Med cruises taking shots at Libya. I miss one Shipmate dearly, AXC Blair who died later in the mid 1980's. Recently I found out how he passed! My request of information on him was answered by several Shipmates, including his CO. Thanks again, Pete and Chuck. ;-) I flew many flights as a non-aircrewman to help out on battered Super B ASW equipment and to enhance communications between AW's TACCO's and repair. These were the most exciting days of my career. ASW searchs and "Time on Top" was by far the best ride that a salior could ask for. I accounted for over 40 + mission flights in the Pacific between all of the islands that made up the USN footprint back then. Not bad for a non-aircrewman. The VP-17 White Lightings were flight accident free for 17 years when I left in late 1982. That record stood for a longtime. Like to hear from old Shipmates....you know who you are.! Kids are grown up and out of college....Tara and I are living it up!..." [25APR2006]

As a mech, we did receive the T-56's in a can, the reduction gear in another and the torque shaft in a third. The "qec" was removed from the wing of our DC-130A aircraft (they all have a interesting story of there own!) and removed the engine from the nacell. A task that took several days to perform. Our test cell was the wing usually a cold night at high power on the line at NAS North Island, San Diego, California! We also maintained the BQM drone engines, like jet go-karts. Lots of fun and TONS of expirenance that has not and will not be repeated in the Navy forever. During that time I was assigned to FASO, VP-31, VP-50 and then VP-31 again. Many of the 27 crewmembers that lost their lives on 03/21/91 at 02:13:39 were fellow crewmembers and close friends. The pain of the loss is still very real for me…even 20 years later. I woke this morning at almost the exact time that the mid air occurred in tears. I can imagine where they were and what they were doing at the moment the collision occurred. How fatigued was the crew that was going off station considering the time of day, weather and no auto pilot? Did anyone know just before it happened? You all will never be forgotten…never!..." CASTRO, AOC Albert Retired aacastro@juno.com "...After my initial P-3 training with VP-31 Moffett Field, California, in March of 1971 I started my first VP operational tour as an Aircrew Ordnanceman with VP-4 NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii. I remember Sherald Juneau the Flight Engineer who became like a brother to me. The fellow Ordies Bob McCoy, Andy "Ord" Anderson, Bob McKinney, Vic Teem, Bill Maye, Glen Schleusser, Howell Robins, Charles Roberson, and of course the two brothers Jim and Rob Jenkins. Pilots like Jim Messegee, Skip Dale, and Bill Broadwell, who cared. Never forget the Cocos Island departing flyby. Everything was just Hunky-Dori. The deployments, detachments, and visits to Japan, Taiwan, Diego Garcia, Australia, Guam, Wake, Philippine Islands, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam are memories burnt into my mind. Never to forget Wichita Det. After five years with the Skinny Dragons I transferred in April of 1976 to shore duty. I had to get back into flight status. So in July of 1978 I transferred into VP-19 Moffett Field, California. I remember the Ordies most of all Randy Corman, Duck Carter, Reno Dickson, Johnny King, Steve Harris, Frank Pesich, and Perry Veto. Drivers like Ray Morris and Don Hefkin both of them pretty boys. I visited a number locations including, Adak, Okinawa, Singapore, Korea, and Iran. Made a number of site revisits, including back to Hawaii for those quarterly torpedo qualifications. Of course we always had to have a full Ordie load team on all those Hawaii flights. After four and a half years with Big Red, and thinking I had enough of West Pac in January of 1983 I transferred to the Naval Air Development Center (NADC), Warminster, Pennsylvania. I remember Bob Flangan, Dale Cain ("Best Man"), and an Ordie named Ron Jerasa. My aircrew shore duty at NADC had me deploying to NAS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada, NAS Bermuda, and the Virgin Islands. In November of 1985 I reported to Oceanographic Development Squadron Eight (VXN-8) at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. During my duty with VXN-8 the World Travelers there was Barry (Hank) Evitts, JD Patterson, Tim Mattson, and Bill Lomba, who I remember most as I was stationed with all four in prior commands (repeat offenders). The civilians Jeff Kerling (Admiral Kerlingus), and Pete Kupstas (Stinky Pete) hit the beach with the rest of us. Then there were the Flight Engineers that no one could ever forget Ed Matteson, Greg Valdez, and Jimmy Danials. What a bunch of great guys, and there was many more, I just had to name a few. While assigned to the World Travelers I made detachments to England, Iceland, Greenland, Portugal, Norway, Scotland, and Spain. After 17 years as a Naval Aircrewman, in December 1989, I reported for my final tour in the Navy with the Naval Aviation Maintenance Office at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. I retired from the United States Navy in April of 1992. Currently I am providing direct staff technical support to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIRSYSCOM) Program Manager for Aviation Training Systems (PMA205), for acquisition and life cycle support of airborne weapons systems. Living in La Plata, Maryland and working in the Patuxent River area, I get to see a few of the old P-3 squadron mates..." [E-Mail Updated 09AUG2005 | 27MAR2001]
