Ten years later, in 1960, I flew to Hong Kong in a plane co-piloted by my old Executive Officer from VS-25 (Cdr. Kelly) An old TBM driver flying an R5D. I spent a year in VP-1. Six months of it at NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan as a Barracks MAA. (One guy died from Encephalitis while we were living in tents, so they moved us into a barracks area) I loved that tour and came home Thanksgiving. Turkey Dinners on both sides of the Dateline. I also ran a Crash Boat Crew and Seaplane Ramp at NAS Cubi Point, Philippines where we operated with P5M's from VP-40 for one week a year. I had to send one of their P5M's back on a barge when the Coxwain of my Line Handling Boat went inside the P5M instead of alongside. Went to the NAS Cubi Point, Philippines for FASRON-113, but it got phased out and I went to NAS instead. Spent time on BHR, Shangri-La, Midway, and Forrestal, plus recruiting in Syracuse, NY and Crash Crew at Pensacola. Retired in Oct of '69..." [25MAR2000]

BAKER, James E. jmlbaker@nemonet.com "...THIS IS ALL NEW TO ME AND I AM LEARNING HOW TO USE IT SO FORGIVE MY IGNORANCE ON COMPUTER OPERATION (served in VP-40 from 1958 to 1961). AS I RECALL, I WAS WITH A DRAFT OF ABOUT FIVE OTHER MEN THAT ARRIVED IN THE P.I. EARLY IN 1958. THE SQUADRON HAD ALREADY DEPLOYED AND THE PLANES & CREWS,ETC. WERE ALREADY THERE. I THINK THE FOLLOWING DAY I WAS SENT WITH SOME CREW OUT ON A FAMILIARIZATION PATROL(I GUESS THAT'S WHAT IT WAS). I HAVE ONLY ONE RECOLLECTION OF THAT FLIGHT. I WAS GIVEN A LITTLE (HANDHELD) CO2 FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND TOLD TO GET UP IN THE HATCH NEXT TO THE APU AND WATCH FOR ENGINE FIRE AT START-UP. AS SOON AS THEY FIRED THEM UP, I LOST MY HAT. TO THIS DAY I DON'T KNOW IF MY LEG WAS BEING PULLED OR NOT. I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT GOOD I COULD HAVE DONE IF THERE HAD BEEN A FIRE OR THAT I WOULD HAVE BEEN DUMB ENOUGH TO TRY TO PUT IT OUT WITH THAT LITTLE CO2 BOTTLE. I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE IGNORANT YOUTH THAT I WAS. AT SOME POINT SHORTLY AFTER THAT I GOT THE PLEASURE OF GOING MESSCOOKING. I, WAS A VETERAN OF THAT MEMORABLE DUTY, HAVING DONE IT IN BOOTCAMP, NAS Memphis, Tennessee, AND TREASURE IS., CA. BUT, WHEN I SAY PLEASURE, I REALLY MEAN THAT. I HAD MUCH BETTER DUTY AND LIBERTY THAN THOSE LEFT IN THE SQUADRON. IN FACT, IT WAS SO GOOD THAT I VOLUNTEERED FOR AN ADDITIONAL NINETY DAYS OF IT. THAT TOOK US UP TO THE TIME FOR ROTATION BACK TO NAS North Island, San Diego, California FOR A YEAR. I DIDN'T REALIZE THERE WAS A CRUISE BOOK MADE FOR THAT TOUR UNTIL I ATTENDED THE Reunion IN PENSACOLA, FL AND SAW ONE. I GUESS WE WERE THE FORGOTTEN ONES IN THE CHOW HALL. AT SOME POINT IN TIME WHILE IN CA CMDR CLINTON WAS RELIEVED BY CMDR CURTISS AND I WAS ASKED IF I COULD TYPE. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER THAN TO ADMIT THAT BUT IT TURNED OUT WELL. THE GUY WORKING IN THE ELECTRONICS SHOP WANTED OUT AND INTO A FLIGHT CREW AND NEEDED A REPLACEMENT AND I WAS IT. THERE MAY BE SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT WILL RECALL THAT I WORKED THE "TWIDGET" STOREROOM. WHEN THE POWERS THAT BE DECIDED WE SHOULD MAKE NS Sangley Point, Philippines OUR PERMANENT HOME AND ALLOWED OTHERS FROM DIFFERENT SQUADRONS TO TRANSFER INTO VP-40. I PICKED UP A HELPER IN THE STOREROOM. AS IT TURNED OUT HE OUTRANKED ME AND I BECAME HIS HELPER. WE WORKED WELL TOGETHER AND WE STILL EXCHANGE CHRISTMAS CARDS. THAT'S IT FOR NOW. NOW HOW DO I SEND THIS?..." [03NOV98]

In 1968 I transferred to NAS Moffett Field, California for a tour with NAMTRADET. Buck Williams was our CO. I taught P-3B electric power systems to pilots and FEs. I taught a couple of other systems but that was a long time ago and I have forgotten their designations. I made AEC during this tour. After NAMTRADET I transferred to VP-46 where I was shop chief in the Electric Shop, AME Shop and Operations and finally I was the Drug/Alcohol Education contact. I made five (5) deployments to NAS Iwakuni, Japan with VP-47 and VP-46, one (1) to NAS Adak, Alaska with VP-46, and one (1) to NS Sangley Point, Philippines with VP-40. My brother and I were both in the squadron those years, and aside from NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, they were some of the best times in both our lives. Mainly because of all the friends-Shipmates that we had. Really for some reason these guys were the best. Everyone worked together, and looked after one another..it was one big family. Need help now! My brother is a candidate for kidney transplant. The V.A. is saying they have no records of VP-40 in NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam from 1965 to 1967. I know and I agree with what everyone just said about the V.A. Anyway aside from a ton of pictures to throw in there face from NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, USS Pine Island (AV-12), etc. If anyone knows were we can get a copy of our Cruise Book for 1966 and 1967 (1965 we have) we would greatly appreciate it ASAP.
