Circa 1968
A BIT OF HISTORY: "00XXX68--I was a member of Navy Patrol Squadron 48 from 1968 until I re-enlisted as an AT-2 at NAS Cubi Point, Philippines in 1972. I was a crewmember (Radio Operator) on Crew 5, LCDR Jim Lohr, Aircraft Commander. Commander Ben Pitts was the squadron CO at this time. I made deployments with VP-48 to NAS Adak, Alaska, Sangley Point RP/det. Cam Ranh Bay RVN, Back to Sangley Point/Cam Ranh/U Tapao, Thailand, And NAS Cubi Point, Philippines. (we were the last active deployed VP Squadron at NAS Sangley Point, Philippines). After Re-enlisting, I went to AVI "B" in Memphis, and returned to NAS Moffett Field, California as a Radio Instructor for awhile, and was subsequently selected to fly with the crew of RP-31, COMNAVAIRPAC's VIP configured P-3A (150511), where I remained until 1977, when I left the Navy. The patch/logo for VP-48 (first known as the "Pregnant Pelicans") represented by the pelican with a submarine in her mouth. Later, the Red and Blue "Boomerangs" were added, and we were known as the "Boomerangers", because "we always came back..." MARKET TIME Units
Three Patrol Air Cushion Vehicles (PACV) arrived at Vung Tau on 1 May to form PACV Division 107 and on 2 May proceeded to the MARKET TIME base at Cat Lo, thus introducing this type craft for the first time into a combat zone. During the rest of the month, maintenance and logistic support equipment was set up and the PACVs were prepared for operations.
In aerial surveillance operations, USS Salisbury Sound (AV-13) with CTF 72 embarked, arrived at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam on 15 May, set up a seadrome and activated Task Group 72.5. SP-5B aircraft immediately began flying patrols from the seadrome in support of MARKET TIME. VP-40 and VP-48 had aircraft detachments at NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam supported by USS Salisbury Sound (AV-13) for the remainder of the month. Fifty two MARKET TIME flights were flown by TG 72.5 during this period. The aircraft on patrol investigated contacts for MARKET TIME ships and reported all contacts and suspicious activity discovered. A detachment of seven P2 aircraft from VP-2 relieved VP-1 as TG 115.6 on 29 May. They were based at Tan Son Nhut Air Base at Saigon and flew in support of MARKET TIME operations.

48 TO GET LAST P5M -- MAYBE
There is a good deal of hope that PATRON 48 will acquire the last P5M-2S built by the Martin Aircraft Company, which, incidently, is the last aircraft of any kind to be built by that company since they will deal strictly in missles and space vehicles in the future.
This last P5M, number 147937, has been delivered to the Navy, but is being delayed at the Martin plant due to servere icing conditions. They are taking advantage of the delay by installing all the latest service changes and modifications.
The first P5M was built in 1951, and the last one was completed 20 December 1960. Delivery to VP-48 has not been guaranteed, but we have hopes.
PATRON PLAQUE GOES TO PENTAGON
The VP-48 squadron plaque will emblazon the hallowed halls of the Pentagon soon. The plaque has been sent and will hang in the "E-ring" between the offices of Admiral Burke (CNO) and Vice Admiral Pirie (DCNO for Sir). Contributed by ROBERT [N] BELL captbell@tampabay.rr.com [02APR99]
