CREWs: VP-48 Crew 10 "...North Islander Newspaper...CREW RETURNS--VP-48 welcomed back its "Far East Ambassadors" last Tuesday. VP-48s Crew Ten, led by Plane Commander, LT John D. Sipes, spent six weeks in NS Sangley Point, Philippines, and NAS Iwakuni, Japan operating with VP-40 and VP-50, respectively. While deployed the crew flew numerous patrol and SAR missions in WestPac. He also became the Squadron Maintenance Officer at that time as the more senior members of the squadron who were reserves were released from active duty after the July 1953 signing of the armistice. The deployment started in June through July 1953 and ended in March 1954. Main base was NS Sangley Point, Philippines until October/November then NAS Iwakuni, Japan..."
