Ford - Bengamin Gary Inciong - Dale Lunt - Ken Meadows - Art St.Cyr - Nicholas W. Ream - and everybody else in the VP-50. Of course I was the mail handler for the souadron. I moved on to Mechanic Shop. We deployed back to NAS North Island, San Diego, California in 1964 I think. Moved up to 2nd Mechanic in Crew 9 under Ike Isikson Barbarian Beer Drinking plane crew leader. Learn a lot from him don't get me wrong. Deployed again to the NS Sangley Point, Philippines flying working parting site seeing P I and again deploying to NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. Aqs soon as we landed there the crew would go to the Seaplane Tender. Art St.Cyr and I would jumping in the bay swimming like acouple of kids at the creek. In Japan we R=in Heroshima. Ford lunt inciong meadows and me R+R hirohima~onetime had a ball. I found Nick Ream in Slydal, Louisiana but haven't found any bodyelse. I flew in crew four with AE1 Tommy Dean as his second mech until April 1968. At this time I went to Flight Engineers school and made the transition to P-3C's. I made several WestPac deployments as well as a deployment to NAS Adak, Alaska. Left VP-50 in June of 1972 for shore duty. My years in VP-50 were some of the finest years I spent in my military career. I miss all of the Shipmates that I had a chance to know and I look forward to the Reunion in Jacksonville in September. "...ALLEN, CDR Earl Russell Retired...E. Russell Allen, CDR. USNR 54, of Lexington Park, Maryland died on December 25, 2008 in St. Mary's Hospital, after a short bout with cancer. He was a joyful, energetic person with a zest for life. He coveted his family and friends, and enjoyed coaching his daughters and their many friends' sports activities. Russell leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 30 years, Constance J. (Smith) Allen; two daughters, Anica Allen and Danielle Allen; his mother, Ellen Allen; two brothers, Mark Allen and Phillip Allen; two sisters, Ellen Richardson and Lydia Allen-Berry; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends. E. Russell Allen Jr. was born on Feb 8, 1954 in Bryn Mawr, PA, to E. Russell Allen, Sr. and the former Ellen Hammond. He was predeceased by his father, E. Russell Allen, Sr. and his sister, Adrienne Allen. He grew up in Ardmore, PA`, and attended The Haverford School near Philadelphia PA. After graduating from Colgate University with a degree in History, he entered the Navy to fly as a Naval Flight Officer in the P-3 Orion aircraft. LT Allen was stationed with VP-50 at NAS Moffett Field, CA and deployed to the western pacific hunting Russian submarines. In the mid-80s he resigned from active duty and continued to serve as a Naval Reservist stationed with the P-3 MAU at Moffett. In the late-1980's, Russ became a defense contractor testing new software for the P-3 at Naval Air Development Center (NADC) in Warminster, PA and spent weekends as a Reservist in VP-64 at NAS Willow Grove, PA. Due to base closure in 1996, he relocated with his family to NAS Patuxent River. Russ was a member, participant, and coach in many organizations, including the following: Member of the Board of Associates Hood College 2007-Present, Board of Trustees The Haverford School 1993 - 1998, Commissioner of the Upper Gwynedd Township PA Summer League, Girl's Basketball Coach Upper Gwynedd Township PA Summer League Girl's Basketball Coach - Towamencin Youth Association (TYA), Basketball Coach - North Penn Squires Girl's Soccer Coach - Montgomery Soccer Assoc (MSA), Girl's Soccer Coach - Towamencin Youth Association (TYA). Russ' love for the Navy and the P-3 never waned. His experiences with the people he knew in the Navy were so rich he always had the material to relate a poignant story that brought a chuckle to the listeners and a warm smile to his own face. Our memories of CDR Russ Allen will be those moments of joy when we shared smiles and the comradeship of Navy life. Russ was totally devoted to his family, his friends, the Navy and his country. VP-50 Crew 10 "...BACKES, AW2 Robert F. "Bob"...Robert F. Backes, Jr., 53, loving husband, father, and brother, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011 after a bout with cancer. Bob was born in Princeton, NJ to the late Emma Doris (Davison) and Robert F. Backes, Sr. Bob served in the US Navy from 1979 to 1985, after which he worked in the grocery business in Virginia before moving to Lancaster to be closer to his family and taking a position with SKH. Leaving SKH after 5 years, he went to work for Toys R’ Us for 10 years. In 2008, he opened his own business, Golf Etc. of Lancaster with his wife, Julie. He is survived by his wife, Julie (McQueen); 3 children: Daniel (25) serving in the US Coast Guard, Ryan (17) and Emma (14); 5 siblings: Nancy Atland, Betsy Ryder, Peggy (Al) Brzowsky, Fred (Julia) Backes and James (Trish) Backes; and 9 nieces and nephews. He enjoyed vacations at the beach, playing golf with his sons and brothers and watching Dallas Cowboys games with his family. I was a ground pounder with VP-50 from 1978 to 1981, based in NAS Moffett Field, California. Like everyone else, went through VP-31 FRAMP, deployed to NAS Misawa, Japan; NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan; NAS Adak, Alaska. Went on all the dets I could, to the PI, NSF Diego Garcia (Dodge City), all the inflight stops of Osan, Yakota, Singapore, Bangkok, etc. I then transfered to NRL-FSD and NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. In 1981 met my wife and had a boy that has a Navy birth certificate. In 1983 transfered to NAS Jacksonville, Florida to pursue a career as a P-3 Flight Engineer. Made it through VP-30 and arrived at VP-56, also at NAS Jacksonville, Florida, where I immediately was deployed to NAS Keflavik, Iceland. I succeeded in getting the quals by the time we returned home. In 1985 I was retired, but it hasn't held me back. I still work with T56 series engines at the OEM. BARKLEY, AVCM Chuck Retired w9bik@arrl.net "...After avionics training at VP-31 / FAETUPAC, NAS North Island, San Diego, California (1962-63, AXAN/AX3), I was a ground pounder with VP-42 (1963-65, AX3/AX2, P2's) at NAS North Island, San Diego, California and deployed to NAS Iwakuni, Japan (changed our homeport to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington while in Japan), and went on detachments to FASU/NSA DaNang, Republic of Vietnam, NAS Cubi Point, Philippines, and NS Sangley Point, Philippines. After VP-42, I went to AVI(B) school (Class 5-41), then on to VP-50 (1965-67, AX2, P5's) at NAS North Island, San Diego, California (deployed to NS Sangley Point, Philippines, and NAF Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam). After VP-50, I taught AV(A) and AVI(B) school at NATTC NAS Memphis, Tennessee (1967-70, AX2/AX1), then went to VS-24 (AX1, 1970, S2's) at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island for a very short tour (made two short cruises on the USS Intrepid, including a hurricane "ride" off Bermuda) prior to going into the TAR program. As a TAR, I was stationed at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey (1970-75, AX1/AXC), NAS Point Mugu, California (1976-79, AXC/AXCS), and at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania (1979-83, AXCS/AVCM), where I retired as the NAS Command Master Chief. After retiring, I worked for over 12 years at NAWC Warminster developing software for P-3's. Now, I develop digital cable TV headend equipment at Motorola, Horsham, PA. I still remember my lost shipmates in VP-42 Crew 8 (P-2, off the Vietnam coast) and VP-50 Crew 13 (P5 off Corregidor Is., PI). I like to think they are at rest with Him now, and recall the good times we had back then. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers singing a "special" version of "From the Halls of Montezuma" in the dungaree bar at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, Orange flight suits and Aussie bush hats in DaNang, Z'ing everything in sight, playing "king of the wing" on P5's in Cam Ranh Bay until we discovered sea snakes, the sounds of grenades at night on the seaplane tenders, and any other war stories of those great years we spent together in the VP Navy - what a ride it was!..." I do UNPAID work as an emcee for the Darrington, WA Bluegrass Festival and have done emcee work at the Wintergrass Festival in Tacoma. Summers find us at festivals from Southern Washington to Prince George, B.C. in Canada. Last year got to go to the International Bluegrass Music Association awards in Louisville. When the reserves were sent home around the 1st weeks of August, I was assigned to SE 5 as 2nd Mech. Transpac"d to NS Sangley Point, Philippines in February 1952. Flew with crew 5 until I broke my right hand during an intramural softball game and was grounded. Returned with the squadron to NAS Alameda, California in August 1952 and flew trainig flights until I was transferred to VP-50 NAS Corpus Christi, Texas in February 1953. Was than transfered to NAS Hutchinson, Kansas, Plane Captain, P2V3 and transfered back to NAS Alameda, California to VA-93 which was getting ready to WesPac on the USS Oriskany. We made the last cruise on her as a straight deck. She was later lenghtend and the angle deck added, I stayed in the Attack and Fighter Navy until I retired as the Jet Shop Chief in AMD, NAS North Island, San Diego, California January 1971 with 20 years, 6 mos. 3 days active duty and 11 months constructive time..."
