Great cruises with hard work and fun. Great times playing acey deucey in the shop and fun times when the lights would go out in the hangar. I also, spent some time a RAIMD providing I-level support to the squadrons at NAS Memphis, Tennessee. I spent 4 years at AIMD NAS Atlanta, Georgia, before going to Naval Aircrew School, P-3 Second Mech School at NAS Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, VP-30 FE School and then to VP-65 (1989-1993) then to VP-93 (the Godfather CDR Carlone, and CDR Cluster) (Operation Restore Hope) October 1993 until March of 1994. We got the word the Executioners were to be decommissioned. Thanks to Jon White (AWCM I think he was by then) I ended up back in NAS Atlanta, Georgia where I retired as a Loadmaster with VR-46. When VP-91 was shut down I was transferred to VP-65 in NBVC NAS Point Mugu, California. I am now the acting OIC and Chief of FMP MOCC EPAC (Fleet Maritime Patrol, Mobile Operations Control Center, Eastern Pacific) also at NBVC NAS Point Mugu, California. I have made some great friends and have been around the world several times. I am sad to see the Orion Squadrons slowly disappear. This included visits to Cam Ranh Bay South. Vietnam, Buckner Bay Okinawa, and Kobe Japan. We went to Kobe to turn in an aircraft for rework. Crew 6 earned "Alpha" status during the 1965-1966 deployment. When VP-50 moved to NAS Moffett Field, California in 1967, I was ordered to VP-31, NAS North Island, San Diego, California. After release from active duty, I affiliated with the reserves and flew with VP-65, NAS Los Alamitos, California. I continued with the reserves at NAS North Island, San Diego, California, NAS Miramar and MCAS El Toro. Reluctantly, I retired in October 1984. On January 6, 1967, crew 6 in SG6 was on maritime patrol from NS Sangley Point, Philippines when we were diverted to look for SG13. They took off after us to perform a rocket firing exercise and their hourly position report was overdue. Upon arriving at the rocket firing area, we observed a SP5B wing floating in the water. Some other debris was floating in the water. This marked the spot where Lt. Dave Stevens and his crew crashed into the water. Dave was a good friend. MONTGOMERY, CAPTAIN David L. Commander Reserve Patrol Wing "...Commander Reserve Patrol Wing - Captain Montgomery hails from Cypress Inn, Tennessee, graduating from Collinwood High School in 1971. He attended the University of Maryland and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1976. In 1978, he entered Aviation Officer Candidate School at NAS Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in November 1979. Upon completion of flight training, his first assignment was with VP-45 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida. In May 1983, he reported to VP-30 as an instructor for first and second tour Naval Flight Officers. In October 1985, he was selected for the Training and Administration of the Reserve (TAR) program and reported to Naval Air Reserve Memphis. Subsequent tours included VP-67 in NAS Memphis, Tennessee, VP-65 in NAS Point Mugu, California and then in June 1992 back to VP-67 where he served as Officer-In-Charge. Following this tour, he reported to Commander, Naval Air Reserve Force, New Orleans, Louisiana, serving as NATOPS Officer then as the VP Program Manager. In August 1996, Commander Montgomery reported to VP-64 as the Executive Officer and in May 1997 assumed the position of Commanding Officer. After the completion of his command tour Captain Montgomery reported to the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. He graduated from ICAF with a Master of Science Degree in "National Resource Strategy" in June 1999. Probably spoke to every pilot/mechanic in the VP squadrons during that time. One exciting time for me was when we had a lone P-3 bouncing the pattern at night. He did about 3 T&G and always had his landing lights on. His next approach was without the lights and I couldn't see him so I gave a go-around. I guess he was pretty close to landing, but he did the go-around. As they were climbing out, the pilot asked why the late go-around? Well it certainly was good training for the pilot. If anyone can remember that incident, let me know. I always wondered who that pilot was. I would hop on as many base aircraft as I could to fly around the islands with the pilots who were staying current. I did meet a VR21 pilot in 1973 when I was living in Maine and I worked with a VR21 mech at FEDEX in LAX 1989-1996. Naval aviation is a small world and I would like to hear from anyone stationed at NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii who might have known me or was station there during 1965-1968. Our group of WAVES have stayed in contact and have had a couple of Reunions. I was also in VP-65 USNAR, NAS Point Mugu, California 1975-1979 as an AD2. I always wanted to me a a/c mech but was denied that rate in 1965. I used the GI bill to get my A&P cert and after VP-65 worked as a mechanic at Flying Tigers at LAX, 1978-1989. I am currently a A/C MX Project Administrator for FedEx at IND. I hope to hear from someone from those "old" Navy days. To those of VP-90, "Skinny" Brown was NOT exaggerating about about his and Mike's FE class shrinking from 16 to 3. I was one those who disappeared from FE Class 7601. There were many reserves in that class. Interesting though is that the 2 reservists ended up with a long flying career and the reamaining active duty sailor didn't. Ask Skinny about the FE trainee from VP-60 who slapped the full Commander's hands for being on the power levers in the simulator! Anybody from VP-68 remember the name of the SAR FE who used to commute from West Virginia every weekend to fly? He was another legend and we often wondered about his home life. Though I went back on active duty with E-2's, what I learned as an aircrewman helped me to be a much better Metalsmith and Maintenance Chief.
