Memorial Picture "...BIRK, LT William H...My father, William H. Birk, passed away May 30th, 2017 just shy of reaching 90. Dad enlisted in the Navy March 1945 as a Seaman Recruit and was released from Active Duty October 1946 at which time he attended Officer Candidate School. Dad got his BS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania and served with VP-42 (1949-1951) and VU-2 (1954-1955) at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island. He was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation, China Service, National Defense, Korean Service and UN Service Medal. Dad was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross - The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade [then Ensign] William H. Birk, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as member of a Patrol Plane in Patrol Squadron FORTY-TWO (VP-42). Participating in numerous missions against hostile North Korean Forces during the period 20 August 1950 to 2 February 1951, he added greatly to the success of his squadron. His courage, skill, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Completed Thirty-Five missions) General Orders: All Hands (September 1952) Action Date: August 20 - December 31, 1950. Memorial Picture "...CLARK, ADR3 Paul...My Father, Paul Clark ADR3 served with VU-2 (1952-1954) as a Plane Captain F8F #40). I know he was at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island when he was discharged in May of 1954 and he spent some time in Porto Rico, but I don’t know where. Does anyone have pictures of the F8Fs in VU-2 or know if they were multi colored as the JDs? My dad could not remember. He passed away November of 2013.
