STEVERSON, Gerald H. (Steve) gopherman@earthlink.net "...I'll be forever grateful to my old VU-8 DP-2E 128401 Flight Engineer buddy Red Batson for putting me onto it. I served with VP-9 in the late 50's as an AE2/AE1 and MAD/ECM/RADAR operator on the Skipper's crew (CDR V. Deitchman). AEC Rodney Kaiser was my Shop Chief, and I remember that we had an AE1 Shop P.O. who wouldn't talk to lower rates except in the line of duty. Got out in 59 after my initial (kiddie) cruise. Got married and went to work as an electrician at an aircraft overhaul outfit in Dothan, AL making the humongous sum of $1.25 per hour! Re-enlisted in mid-60 and joined Red Batson on the DP-2E crew dropping KDAs and Q2Cs in VU-8 (1960-1963). Later served in VP-16 (AEC - 1968) with one deployment to NS Rota, Spain, but made Warrant and had to leave the squadron. Later supported VPs at NAFSIG as Avionics/GSE/Ass't AIMD Officer (1970-74) including a period when deployed VP had to operate from Catania airport while NAFSIG runways were closed for resurfacing. Retired in late 77. Ah, the memories this website brings back!!! Gerald H. (Steve) Steverson, 5713 Gardenia Ave., Milton, FL 32570..." [02AUG98]
WALSH, AFCM Mike P. Retired Papa2vctr@aol.com "...I joined the "Mad Foxes in December of 1956. I worked in P/P and then went on flight crew as a second wiper to AD1 Stwert. "I" for Irving...Stewart. Bill Betts was the PPC. What a great crew. Never could make 2nd class, so I was never an "Official" PC, but qualified to take a trip to Las Vegas in 1959, and Houston Texas in 1959. I loved VP-5. I still LOVE VP-5. So when is the Reunion? I left the squadron and the Navy, in May of 1960, to set the world on fire. I ran out of matches pretty quick, in fact in just 84 days when I re-upped and went to Puerto Rico. The Squadron came down for their Springboard ex, and I caught hell. It sure was great seeing the guys again. I was attached to VU-8 (now VC-8) and was PC on a DP-2E. Can you believe this. We flew at 20,000 feet to launch drones for target practice. I finally got to use high blower...and it worked well. Regards..." [06MAY2000]
