VP-44 Shipmates
ALDEA, Mike aldeam@aptea.com "...I served with VP-44 from 1971 through 1974. I worked in the Tron Shop with Jesse Castillo and Ty Greeves. The thing I remember most about the squadron were all the guys hidding long hair underneath the wigs they wore with their ball caps. Also the big drug bust in Rota as we ended the deployment in 1972. I managed to join and leave the squadron without ever having any of the normal interviews with the CO. Also managed to get my "crow" without the normal ceremony in front of the squadron. Only time I got caught having to wear a dress uniform was for a NAS Bermuda Change-of-Command ceremony while we were deployed there. My best memory is the 36 hour liberty hop I got to go on to Amsterdam from NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal. Considering VP-44's history I'm surprised the Navy didn't choose other squadrons to decommission instead..." [12JUN2000]

CAHILL, Kevin R. kevin1fe@aol.com "...I retired after spending all 26 years in P-3 Orions. I was lucky to have spent all my tours in great squadrons. Started my flying career as a second mech in VP-44, 71-75, then moved on to become a TAR in VP-92. Qualified as a Flight Engineer Jan 76. Orders then to VP-69 from 79-82. A follow on tour back to VP-92 from 82-87. Moved from there to VP-68 from 87-91. Didn't have enough so went back "home" to VP-92 from 91-96 when I finally retired to a great job as an Aviation Safety Inspector with the FAA in Boston. As I look back did it all from pumping a grease gun on the flight line, to Maintenance Chief, all while in a flying billet. Logged almost 9000 flight hours as a P-3 FE and am proud of it. In my later years as the MMCPO I was extremely proud of the maintenance folks that gave the extra effort to get the aircraft "up". The best part was when I preflighted then flew the aircraft on a PMCF. Usually never having a gripe to write up when we were done. The VP-Navy was my Navy and am proud to have been a part of it. Thanks Shipmates!..." [07FEB98]

COOK, Ralph L. bluesgtar@redrose.net "...I served in VP-44 from January 1960 to October 1963. I was thrilled to find this site and immediately bent my brain trying to remember names and adventures to tickle the memories of others. I served my whole tour of duty in VP-44 beginning in January of 1960 and extending to October of 1963. I was on the P5M beach crew in NAS Norfolk, Virginia and I remember how cold Willoughby(sp) Bay became on some of those nights in January and February. I advanced to the metal shop under two chiefs one nicknamed "Pappy" the senior chief's name escapes me. There was an Dakota Indian named Ted Lague, a really nice guy. There were the Cota brothers, Richard and ? Richard Morgan of Thornwood, NY, and a host of others in that shop. We went to the Rappahanock River with the squadron where we joined with the USS Albemarle, a Seaplane Tender. I fell asleep on the wing of a P5M and got second degree burns..Ouch! I remember Billy Delaney from Brooklyn NY and Carl "Robbie" Robertson from Pennsauken NJ. There was Robbies buddy Joe Carr, an AO3, he was a crazy man if there ever was one. I liked him just for the fun he was. The transition to P2V's was not easy. We lost LM-5 in key west, it burned to the ground. We lost LM 4 in NAS Norfolk, Virginia when Lt Vincent forgot to put the gear down after a dozen 'touch and go' approaches. Lt Vincent was well liked by all and we hated to see that happen to him. We went to NAS Sigonella, Sicily with our P2V-5F's and I managed to get on the crew of LM-4 BU NO. 131453 with LCDR Stephan and ?? There was a radioman named Hugh Oliver Talley whose name and initials on his shirt spelled Talley HO! We had an ordnanceman on that crew who was Huge, a black man who was from Philly. I wish I could remember more names. In NAS Norfolk, Virginia there was Jerry Fann and "Big Charley from NC, There was a man named Reggie Fear and a Plane Captain named Paul Owens and one named Walters. The hot comedy album in the Barracks was Dave somebody with a lot of southern humor. In NAS Sigonella, Sicily we did a "Med Fam" cruise to Venice, Rome (saw pope paul?) Pisa and Naples. Then on to Morocco to use our SARA gear to track John Glenn in Mercury 7, Just in case. That was quite a high point. We also stopped in Marseilles France and Rota Spain where I swear I saw a U-2 spy plane sitting out on the Tarmac. In NAS Patuxent River, Maryland I met a girl over at St. Mary's JC and we flew high over Maryland for a while. I played Guitar with a small group off the base in NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. The tenor sax player is still a friend today. He was a radioman his name is Douglas W. Lloyd. He is famous for backing into a P-3 with a stakeside truck, I think it was LM-1. Doug is now a successful engineer with Motorola in Phoenix. I have an injection molding business in Lancaster County PA, "Dutch Country". If anyone from that era would like to get together, I am game. If you are visiting Pennsylvania Dutch country, I am your host..." [25DEC99]

ESTERLINE, Ron jantro@reliable-net.net "...I remember well the name, and most of the faces of my service era Shipmates: Cota, Mauro, McKearney, Overman, Sepuch, St. John, and Wojton who have posted here. When I refused the Navy's kind offer of Flight Training at NAS Pensacola, Florida in exchange for an extra 18 months active commitment, they assigned my reserve SA butt to VP-44 as AI/Nav Yeoman (Navy for sweeping out the Navigation Office once a week). So from July 1957 to July 1959 I had to pick up after 5 officers (Malm, Renter, etc.) and guard $25 million worth of seaplanes with a billy club 48 hours a week. My main partner in crime was Jack Flannelly, a sometimes AE3 - our finest hour was hoisting the Finnish national ensign (liberated from the NOB enlisted theater during a Tom and Jerry cartoon) to the top of the flagpole at NAS Norfolk, Virginia - we heard it was about noon before the Jarheads determined NAS Norfolk, Virginia was not being visited/overrun by the Finns, and finally hoisted the US colors. While standing post watch one night, I was inspired to write "The Ballad of Champ Thompson" - VP-44's CO at the time - a ditty about the P5M and its crew - "...they rolled her down to the edge of the ramp, the Beachmaster he said "Champ! Rev your engines and let her fly, go bore some holes in that big blue sky..." Maybe I'll post it all here sometime. By now its Bastille Day 1959, and my active duty was up - Ha! Called me back in September to testify at the court martial of a PO1 who had made unwanted advances to a sleeping knife weilding parachute rigger. As I recall, Jack Overman was OOD the night it all went down, and its a story he may want to tell. Hope all these guys I can remember are doing well: Gene Tometsko, Karl Mart, Perry Hinch, Dale Innes, Joe Chuifo, Reggie Fear, Chief Dries, Burl Burch, and Bob Graves - PJ O'Leary's probably still a jerk..." ELLIOTT, CAPTAIN Dave davide1955@aol.com "...I served in VP-44 from '79 to '82. Just missed the NAS Keflavik, Iceland deployment when I arrived in the squadron. Went on to fly with CAC6 (PPC Mike Caruso) on a WESTPAC deployment and finished as the PPC for CAC8 (JO crew) on a NS Rota, Spain/ NAF Lajes, Azores, Portugal/ASCENSIONS deployement. Followed Sean O'Neil to D.C. for a tour as Head of National Aviation Recruiting program for NAVCRUITCOM from '82-'85, then left active duty for a job with Texas Instruments in Dallas, TX (13 years). We were recently acquired by Raytheon. Maintained affiliation with the Navy through the Naval Air Systems Command Reserve Program. Currently on a CO tour with Naval Air Warfare Center in Orlando, Florida and having a ball! I would like to hear from any of the VP-44 members during the '79-'82 era, especially those I flew with. CAC6 - I will never forget the multiple approaches we shot at NAS Brunswick, Maine in the blizzard on our return from our 7 month WESTPAC deployment. NAS Brunswick, Maine was in the midst of a blinding blizzard and the wives were in the hangar. I was the 3P/2P. I flew the precision approaches while LT Jim Hanley prepared to take the transition to landing if we spotted the runway. We finally made it on the ground and taxied into the hangar. We were safe and the wives were happy! CAC8 - We never told anyone how we had to decide between a "ditch" or our "quasi" precision approach thanks to great crew coordination on our Ascension Island Det. Running low on gas, having shot multiple approaches on an ADF beacon (DH=600AGL) with no succeess, and having discussed a ditch with the TACCO, we elected to use our SS3 radar operator, TACCO, and flight crew to find a "fogged in" runway. I think of that often and I'm sure the rest of the crew does as well. It was a story never told, but worthy of an air medal for the entire crew - saving a plane and the crew! I have one more story to share. One night in NS Rota, Spain, I received a call at the BOQ - I was just recovering from a week of "walking pneumonia". I guess I was the only pilot left in town. The duty office needed a crew to fly to NAS Sigonella, Sicily and help a VP-44 VIP flight that was to pick up a VIP in NAS Sigonella, Sicily and return to ROTA. The VIP flight had developed a "delaminated or cracked" windshield. We pulled the crew together in launched for NAS Sigonella, Sicily, cleaning the aircraft along the way to serve as the VIP flight. Upon our arrival our FE went over to begin pre-flighting their a/c, which we were to ferry back to NS Rota, Spain (below 10K and slower speeds due to the crack). Our FE climbed up to look at their delaminated windshield and thought he might "clean" the windshield with Windex since he was already on the ladder. The "bubbles" mysteriously disappeared! They turned out to be water spots and not delamination bubbles! The worst part was that the VIP crew took our airplane anyhow since we had cleaned it all night on our flight over to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. We were stuck with the "dirty windshield" aircraft which we flew back to NS Rota, Spain. JOTL (Jr Officer Terroist League) presented a bottle of Windex to the PPC of that airplane when he left the squadron. What fun!! CAC6 and CAC8 let me hear from you!!..." [27MAY99]

After serving two different tours at NS Roosevelt Roads, PR, I went on to VFA-131 at NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida and retired at NAS Norfolk, Virginia HC-6. To my enjoyment I have seen some old Shipmates while brousing through your site. Hopefully I will have an opportunity to contact others as well, people who's life touched mine in such a way that I have many fond memories of them. If you recognize my name - drop me a line..." ESCOBAR, Robert "Esky" Jr. fra45@earthlink.net "...I was in VP-50 from about February 1957 (ATAN) through August 1963 (AT1). Went to FAETUPAC for instructor duty where I taught maintenance on the ASA-16 Integrated Display System. Advanced to E-7; AXC. Orders to NATTC, Millington (dreamsheet requested "any spanish speaking country") for AT-B School then on to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland and VP-44. Picked up E-8 and transferred across the ramp to VP-49 where we made the first deployment in the P-3C's to "beautiful downtown NAS Keflavik, Iceland". Generated many "UR's" against the tech manuals. Made two deployments then received orders to NAVPRO, Burbank where I got to process all those "UR's" I'd generated while in the Fleet! Who says there's no justice? Retired from the Nav in August 1975..." [28JUN2000]

During 1972 I flew with VP-45 and VP-44 while I designed and made operational the secure teletype communications system for P3 A and B models in the EastLantMed area. Though I flew close to 2000 hours in P-3s my flight time was never logged which was a big disappointment to me as I thought I made a significant contribution to the ASW effort.
