VR-22
Tailcode: JM
VR-22 Disestablished: 00APR67
I was the last MMCO in VR-22 and was present at the disestablishment in NS Rota, Spain. We disestablished in 1992, around April. I can look for the exact date on an award, but I know it was not 1967 (I originally reported to VR-24 NS Rota, Spain in July of 1968 because before it was VR-22, it was VR-24 Det NS Rota, Spain with just the Hercs there. The det had been created in July of 1971 after VR-24 homeported in NS Rota, Spain with Hercs, C-2As and C-118s, changed homeports back to NAF Naples, Italy, only taking the C2s, retiring the C118s and leaving the Hercs in NS Rota, Spain as the Det until around 1985 when they were commissioned as an independent squadron VR-22 with both C and KC models and increasing mission to include tanking as well as logistics transport. VR-24 continued in NS Rota, Spain and then in NAS Sigonella, Sicily with a myriad of aircraft including C1As, C2As, HC-53s and T-39s and eventually broke into a couple of squadrons.
